Airforce Pledges Commitment to Peace with Benue Communities
From David Torough, Makurdi
The Nigerian Airforce has pledged to commit to peace in its dealings with members of the communities in Benue State, where it is based.
The Air Officer Commanding Tactical Air Command Makurdi, AVM Precious Amadi, reiterated the commitment during a courtesy visit to the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, yesterday at the peoples’ House, Makurdi.
The AOC informed the governor that the command has noticed some encroachment on its land in recent times, despite the agreement reached in 2020, in which the Nigerian Air Force in the interest of peace ceded 850 hectares of land out of the disputed land to the Ugondo community.
.He, therefore, appealed to Ortom to expedite the process for issuance of a certificate of occupancy on the lands to enable the command to continue the construction of perimeter fences.
Amadi, who newly assumed duty as the head of the command, also assured the governor of the command’s assistance to combat the security challenges confronting the state.
“As a security formation, one of our top priorities is to support the Benue State Government to confront the current security challenge bedeviling the state and the region in particular,” he said.
In his response, Ortom urged the Nigerian Air Force not to renege on the agreement to concede the hectares of land contained in the standing peace agreement, brokered by the State Government.
On the complaint from the new AOC on further encroachment on the land belonging to the Command, Governor Ortom directed the Ministry of Lands, Survey and Solid Minerals to hasten the process for the issuance of certificate of occupancy to NAF.
He said that he was ready to sign the certificate of occupancy based on the agreement reached with NAF so the land disputes could be amicably resolved.
The Governor blamed the ongoing dispute on the ambiguous manner in which lands were allocated by the early governments, and expressed readiness that his administration would put the records straight to prevent further altercations between the Airforce and the host community.
He noted that the leaders of the communities have indicated willingness to abide by the standing agreement.
