Alia’s N605bn Budget Targets Rural Roads, Agriculture, Health, Others

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, on Monday presented a N605.5 billion proposed budget for the 2026 fiscal year to the State House of Assembly, declaring that his administration is firmly committed to rural development, livelihood support and sustained economic growth.

The budget, christened “Budget of Rural Development, Livelihood Support and Sustained Growth,” was laid before lawmakers at the Assembly Complex in Makurdi for consideration and approval.

Governor Alia said the proposal is designed as a practical roadmap to reposition Benue’s economy and ensure that economic growth translates into improved living standards for ordinary citizens, particularly in rural communities.

Out of the total budget of N605,506,764,066.16, the sum of N281.08 billion, representing 46.4 per cent, is earmarked for recurrent expenditure, while N342.42 billion is allocated to capital projects. The governor explained that the recurrent component reflects a 21.69 per cent increase over the revised 2025 figures, largely due to the sustenance of the new minimum wage and other overhead obligations.

He stressed that capital investment remains the core driver of the administration’s development agenda, noting that the transformation of the rural economy is no longer optional.

“Transforming our rural economy is a necessity. This budget prioritises investments in roads, infrastructure and productive activities that will unlock rural productivity and improve quality of life,” Alia said.

According to him, 30.23 per cent of the capital budget has been set aside for rural roads, feeder roads and bridges to link farming communities with markets, schools and healthcare facilities, reduce post-harvest losses and stimulate local commerce.

The governor explained that 55.66 per cent of the capital budget will go to sustained growth initiatives, including education, health, infrastructure, innovation and digital transformation. Rural development—covering agriculture, rural electrification, water supply and environmental protection—accounts for 30.23 per cent, while livelihood support programmes such as social protection, MSME growth and cooperative development will receive 14.11 per cent.

Reviewing the outgoing 2025 fiscal year, Governor Alia acknowledged economic and security challenges but highlighted what he described as significant gains. He disclosed that security had improved through the deployment of 5,000 Benue State Civil Protection Guards working with federal agencies and local communities.

On infrastructure, he reported the near completion of underpasses in Makurdi and Gboko, the completion of about 50 kilometres of roads in the state capital, and ongoing construction of more than 387 kilometres of roads across the state—developments he said have placed Benue among the top five states in capital expenditure per capita.

The governor also announced progress in workers’ welfare, revealing that salary arrears inherited from previous administrations had been reduced from ten months to three, while pension and gratuity backlogs had similarly been cut.

In agriculture, Alia cited the reactivation of the fertiliser blending plant, subsidised farm inputs, the distribution of 150,000 oil palm seedlings, and the test run of a fruit juice factory to reduce post-harvest losses. He added that the near-completed Benue Beer project is expected to generate over 1,000 direct jobs.

Governor Alia assured lawmakers and residents that his administration would maintain fiscal discipline, block revenue leakages and expand internally generated revenue through automation, without imposing additional hardship on citizens.

He expressed confidence that with the support of the House of Assembly, the 2026 budget would deepen development, expand economic opportunities and secure a more prosperous future for Benue State.

Senator Araraume Backs Tinubu for Second Term

By Mike Odiakose, Abuja

Senator Ifeanyi Araraume has declared support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Araraume, who spoke to newsmen at his Isiebu country home in Okigwe LGA, said Tinubu has the constitutional right to seek a second term, insisting that the president has performed well and deserves another four years to consolidate ongoing reforms.

He cautioned against what he described as inaccurate narratives about the ruling party and the nation’s political structure, stressing that Nigeria is not a one-party state.

According to him, Nigeria operates a multiparty democracy with more than 40 registered political parties, a development he said clearly reflects democratic freedom and political plurality.

Araraume said every Nigerian has the freedom to join any political party of choice, noting that members who joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) were neither forced nor coerced.

He explained that political realignments are not new in the country, recalling that similar movements occurred during the era of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Araraume said the APC functions as one family, with collaboration across the federal, state, and local government levels, adding that the party remains united behind President Tinubu’s re-election bid.

He disclosed that the APC has commenced an electronic registration exercise, urging existing members to validate their membership while encouraging new entrants to register.

Speaking on Imo State, Araraume said Governor Hope Uzodimma is currently serving his final tenure, expressing confidence that whoever the party presents would be competent and acceptable.

He said the party would support its eventual candidates across all levels in the state, adding that while there is always room for improvement in governance, issues identified would be constructively addressed.

Araraume also recalled his role in Tinubu’s presidential campaign in 2023, saying the president appointed him then as national director of trade and economy for Southern Nigeria, covering the South East, South South, and South West, noting that if given another opportunity, Tinubu would deliver even stronger performance.
