The Benue State Action Committee on COVID-19 has inaugurated two committees on intra and inter boundaries with a charge to keep a watch on the movement of people in and out of the State.
Performing the ceremony at the New Banquet Hall of Government House, Makurdi, Chairman of the committee and Deputy Governor, Engr. Benson Abounu said the move was part of efforts by the Committee to ensure that infectious cases were identified and quarantined for treatment to avoid contact with others and possible spread spread of the virus.
Abounu tasked the committees to be serious in their assignment by ensuring all those coming in through the entry points including it’s boundaries with Cameron were properly checked to ascertain their level of temperature, which is one of the basic symptoms of the virus.
He said the level at which the virus has spread in other states called for concern and the need to intensify effort to keep the state out further danger.
Abounu who assured that government would provide the necessary logistics and support required by the committees in discharging their duties, said the committees were backed by the Federal Government Quarantine Act as replicated in the state.
He thus called on the committees to see their duty as a life saving one.
While taking a rundown on the effort made by the committee to stem the spread of the disease, the deputy governor expressed dismay over poor compliance to measures put in place by the committee to check the spread of the disease. He then warned that henceforth, the committee would not be taking it likely with anyone caught flouting the measures.
He said, the state, wouldn’t wait for the disease to infect more people before intensifyig effort. He, therefore, announced that a joint task force would be constituted to ensure compliance on the measures of preventing pandemic.
The inter-boundaries committee is to be headed by the representative of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Oko-Jaja Adangoi, while the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Barko Samak will head the intra-boundaries committee.
