Hundreds of protesting youths clashed early morning on Monday with the police at the premises of the Benue State House of Assembly.
The youths, according to reports thronged the premises of the Assembly complex to protest alleged security cover extended to the minority faction in the Assembly’s leadership crisis to hold a session.
DAILY ASSET learnt that six Legislators out of the 30 members converged on the Assembly complex led by the impeached former speaker, Hon. Terkimbi Kyange. The six were promptly allowed access to the Assembly complex to hold a session.
However, the 24-members of the House who last week impeached Kyange and elected a new speaker, Hon. Titus Ubah were allegedly barred from entering the Assembly complex.
Consequently, the youths in support of the 24 members loyal to state Governor, Samuel Ortom stormed the Assembly complex located behind the Government House in the Makurdi Old GRA.
Their attempt to gain access to the Assembly complex led to a bloody clash where youths sustained injuries. It was not confirmed at press time whether there was loss of life in the fracas but stern-looking police men shot in the air and released tear gas canisters to supposedly disperse the protesting youths.
More details soon.
