From Chris Gaga, Makurdi
Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom Wednesday, dumped the All Progressives Congress(APC) for the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), the same party he left in 2015 after loosing the gubernatorial primaries.
Ortom declared for the PDP in Makurdi Government House at a meeting with elected Local Government Chairmen and Councillors in the state. He was billed to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja in one of the many reconciliation meetings he has attended lately as the APC struggled to prevent him leaving the party.
The Governor has been rumoured for over two weeks to be on his way out of the party after he disagreed with his estranged godfather, Senator George Akume. He had accused the state chapter of the party of issuing issued him a “red card” saying he was “available” to look elsewhere for his political future.
Before todays formal declaration for PDP, Ortom had disoolved his cabinet and sacked more than half of the Commissioners and senior officials loyal to Akume.
Tuesday, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Terkimbi Kyange was impeached and Hon Titus Uba elected in a power tussle that many believed had Ortom’s under cover support. The success of that “project” paved way for his decampment Wednesday, a close ally who preferred anonymity told DAILY ASSET.
The Governor who is seeking a second term in office may have to slug it out with 13 other gubernatorial aspirants of the party for the party’s ticket for the 2019 general elections.
