DAILY ASSET AWARD: Nigerian Breweries Plc company of the year

On the November 16, 1946 a small company that would later become a corporate giant Nigeria, Nigerian
Breweries born. The company started with Star Lager as it first bottled beer. The company has since grown with assorted brands in the market wit (which it controls the nation’s beverages market.
With a workforce of over 4,000 employees, the company has remained one of Nigeria’s highest tax payers boosting the Internally Generated Revenue of Nigeria especially the States.
However, the company as part of its long-term plan for its host communities as CSR in Education came up with the Felix Ohiwerie
Education Trust Fund established in 1994 with a commencement capital of N100 million as a vehicle to meet the aspiration to play a more
active role in the development of Education in Nigeria. Since then, NB Plc have impacted over 43,000 students across the country, built
about 400 classrooms and about 35 libraries equipped with furniture and books in both primary and secondary schools across various communities across our country.
In 2017, Nigerian Breweries through commissioned thirty-seven (37)
newly renovated classrooms, six (6) convenience, a library and installed borehole with an over-head tank for LGEA Model Nursery and Primary School Kawo, Kaduna and several others across Kaduna.
At GTC Kano NB Plc commissioned and handed over the school structures
provided by Nigerian Breweries Plc.
The new facilities include: newly constructed block of 5 classrooms, toilets, borehole and library furniture and renovated Physics and
Chemistry labs that will serve the school. Also the classrooms and library are furnished with students’ desks, chairs and tables for teachers, with provision of text books.
In the Health Sector, Kudendan Community last year in December received Construction of two blocks
a) Renovation of one block and toilet facility
b) Supply of hospital furniture
c) Provision of borehole
Other health interventions provided to Kaduna State includes; a fully furnished hospital ward at the VVF Centre at Hajia Sawaba General
Hospital, Zaria Kaduna State to improve healthcare delivery in the Northern region, a mini-theater facility and a female orthopedic ward were donated at St. Gerards Catholic Hospital Kaduna, a CT Scan machine and an ultra-modern X-ray machine at St. Gerard’s.
NB Plc projects are done in diligent pursuit of Corporate Social Responsibility goal – Winning with Nigeria: by being a responsive and distinguished corporate citizen of the States where NB does business.
In Winning with Nigeria,
• NB Plc have made visible social impact in many spheres, notably in
health, education, sport, water and community development amongst
others
• NB Plc has invested over N175bn in developing world-class brewing
facilities in the past 5 years
• supported in the nation’s food security through our over N1billion
Sorghum value chain project via the sponsorship of a research into the
development of higher yield sorghum seedlings – thus raising farmer
yields from 1 to 4.5tons per hectare over a 5 year period
• invested into Cassava value chain to increase cultivation and
industrial utilization of the tuber
• NB Plc support a work force of about 4000 ensuring families have and
continuously enjoy the basic means of livelihood
• Supporting local manufacturing of bottles, cans, crates, cartons,
labels, crown corks, nylon wrappers, and wooden pallets

In a year in which many corporate organisations managed to stay afloat, Nigerian Breweries showed class not only in its profitable performance and also in additional commitment to CSR delivering on projects with long-lasting impact on the lives of the people. On the basis of its outstanding contributions to community development through CSR, the Editorial Board found NB Plc worthy of recognition as the “Company of the Year 2017”.
