Governor of Taraba State, Arc Darius Dickson Ishaku:
Ishaku assumed office in May 29, 2015 with a clear resolve to make positive difference in the lives of the people of his state.
His development blueprint aptly christened “Rescue Agenda” is focused on aggressive transformation of the socio-economic and political landscape of the state.
Towards this end, Governor Ishaku identified agriculture as the main plank of the Rescue Agenda. Two and half years into his four-year tenure, Arc Ishaku has recorded tremendous success in the agricultural sector.
His star project in Jalingo, the Taraba Green House in which he invested about N1billion was commissioned by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo during his state visit to the state on August 25, 2017.The 5-hectare ‘Green House’ is serviced by Onida Agri Solutions and produces a wide variety of vegetables including 250 tonnes of tomatoes per hectare. The project offers dozens of jobs directly and indirectly to the people of the state just as it provides agricultural produce for export markets.
In line with his commitment to develop agriculture, Governor Ishaku supplied water pumps worth over N100 million to dry season farmers across the 16 local government areas of the state to boost rice production. The rice production initiative has created thousands of jobs and boosted food supply in the state as well as incomes of small holder farmers.
The Governor promptly carried out the rehabilitation Highland Tea company at the Tea estate in Kakara, Mambilla Plateau committing over N1billion in the rehabilitation work.
By far, Governor ishaku’s most outstanding contribution to the agricultural sector is the enactment of the law for the Anti – open grazing law which is aimed at addressing the incessant clashes between pastoralists and farmers across the state with the attendant security implications including destruction of lives and property. The law also aims to boost livestock production through the use of ranches.
As part of the measures to boost agricultural production, the governor in the course of 2017 provided funds for early procurement of assorted brands of fertilizers and other farming inputs and implements to farmers committing over N1billion.
Governor Ishaku could be said to be an all round achiever as his footprints can be seen in the sectors like water supply, provision of infrastructure and development of the education and health sectors.
His commitment to peace in the state has endeared him to the people. His mantra ”give me peace, I will give you development,” has become the very popular with most Tarabans.
For his single-minded commitment to the development of the agricultural sector as a major employer of labour and revenue earner for Taraba State, the Editorial Board found Arc Darius Dickson Ishaku worthy for nomination for the award of Governor of the Year on Agricultural Development.
