The Dangote Group has disclosed that its 650,000BPD refinery project under construction in Ibeju Lekki, Lagos will be completed by end of December.
The company’s Group Executive Director, Strategy, Capital Projects and Portfolio Development, Mr Edwin Devakumar said yesterday in Abuja,
while delivering a corporate keynote address at the Nigeria International Petroleum Summit (NIPS).
He assured Nigerians that the project would be completed in December, adding: “The refinery has so far achieved considerable milestones considering the global health crisis that hindered the desirable progress.
“The project has incurred some delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As at date, the project construction has progressed to 79 per cent and an overall project completion of 89.50 per cent, considering engineering, procurement and construction.
“At the current rate of progress the mechanical completion is now expected to be accomplished by fourth quarter. Commissioning is expected to commence immediately”, he said.
Devakumar said the $12 billion refinery is expected to process a variety of light and medium grades of crude to produce Euro-V quality clean fuels.
He said the refinery would also produce 10.4 million tonnes (Mt) of gasoline, 4.6Mt of diesel, and 4Mt of jet fuel a year.
“It will also produce 0.69Mt of polypropylene, 0.24Mt of propane, 32,000t of Sulphur, and 0.5Mt of carbon black feed annually,” Devakumar added.
On the economic benefits of the refinery,
Devakumar said it would create thousands of direct and indirect jobs for Nigerians and increase the country’s Gross Domestic Product.
He said it would also save the country the foreign exchange expended on importation of petroleum products and guarantee product availability in the market.
Devakumar said apart from the Nigerian market, the refinery would be exporting refined petroleum products to Europe and South America as part of its business strategy.
2023: Akwa Ibom People told to Shun Sentiments in Choosing Leaders
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. James Iniama has advised the people of the state to ensure that they choose political leaders devoid of sentiments but based on character and competence.
Iniama also said that all the aspirants should be subjected to critical examination to find out what they can offer to the state.
The stalwart was speaking against the backdrop of the numerous aspirants who have started emerging with the hope to clinch the ticket for the primary election of the PDP, which is the ruling party in the state
It was further gathered that the aspirants have started building camps while others are in aggressive consultations to see if they will be find favour in the sight of the incumbent, Governor Udom Emmanuel.
Iniama, who is also one of the governorship aspirants while interacting with journalists in Uyo yesterday said all the aspirants should be put in a box where they (including him) would be scrutinized so that the best would emerge.
He also said gone are the days politicians use gift items to woo the people, insisting that the people are now poised to look out for business-minded politicians who are ready to work for them.
He said, “This is the time to look inward and be very deliberate, let us not make the mistakes of Nigeria. Nigerians were sentimental in 2015. We left President GoodLuck Jonathan and voted APC’s Mohammadu Buhari. So we have to be careful about our choice of leadership.
“We need aspirants who understand what needs to be done, and who is ready to fill the gaps to meet the needs of the people. We need leaders who understand the philosophy of leadership, not just a career person but a business-minded political person”
Governor Emmanuel has remained silent concerning who may likely succeed him in 2023.
2023: Tambuwal Reinforces Call for Restructuring Nigeria
By Jude Opara, Abuja
As political parties reposition for the 2023 general election, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reechoed the call for the restructuring of the country before the conduct of the next general elections.
Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and governor of Sokoto state, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal said Nigeria must embrace relative autonomy and decentralization of power, saying this will unleash the energies of our people, especially, the young because it is time to allow Nigeria to develop.
This is as the National Chairman-elect of the party, Senator Iyorcha Ayu also assured that time has come to rescue Nigeria from the propaganda machinery of the All Progressives Congress (APC) because the country cannot continue to share sovereignty with bandits and criminals.
Sen. Ayu who was addressing party stakeholders at a two day retreat yesterday in Abuja, said the PDP is on a journey to “Rescue and Rebuild Nigeria” and that the damages done by the APC has resulted to bandits and terrorists gang taking over the country with collapsed economy, comatose manufacturing sector, soaring prices and depreciated naira.
Tambuwal, who was speaking on behalf of the governors said PDP is poised to write a new chapter for Nigeria, adding that time has come for the country to be taken to its destination which has the prospects of greatness and progress.
According to him, the PDP is now once again a well-oiled, serviced vehicle that will midwife the Nigeria of our dreams.
“The damage done by the APC is pretty obvious – insecurity everywhere, including shared sovereignty with criminal and terrorist gangs, a collapsed economy with a comatose manufacturing sector, soaring prices, naira near worthless, interest rates very high, with the Central Bank of Nigeria picking and choosing winners and losers and virtually running a parallel government, (which even leaves the Vice President confused), collapsed infrastructure, terrorist sympathizers in government, and confusion everywhere.
“It is indeed time to Rescue and Rebuild Nigeria. Nigeria is in an urgent need for a surgical operation. Nigeria is in a permanent emergency.
“We all know what the problems are. They are man-made. And is therefore resolvable. It requires a focused, determined, knowledgeable and patriotic organisation of like minds to build the critical mass necessary for a great leap forward. Yes, it requires leadership, with vision and discipline.
“We suffer from a crisis of governance. The unity of Nigeria is facing unprecedented challenges. Life in Nigeria is increasingly becoming brutish and short as insecurity ravages the land. Poverty is the forte of the ordinary Nigerian. The health and education of our people has not improved. Our people are in want. The economy is in dire straits with the exchange rate now about N540 to a Dollar from the N150 to a Dollar when PDP left office. Prices of food stuff and essential commodities are unsustainable. Clearly beyond the reach of the average Nigerian.
“Between 35 to 40% of Nigerians are unemployed. And women and Youths bear the main brunt. Bandits, kidnappers, terrorists are having a field day. Almost unchallenged. Our children are not safe even in their schools.
“Corruption still stalk the land. Nepotism, ethnic and religious bigotry reign supreme in today’s APC’s Nigeria. Our infrastructure is still comatose.
“Trust and hope in Nigeria is at its lowest. Our lamentations can go on, ad infinitum. But the test of leadership is the ability to solve problems.”
The incoming Chairman who is billed to assume office next month said the PDP must strategize and offer workable alternatives to rescue and rebuild the country.
“We must be a party that thoughtfully articulate and design a clear programme of where we want to take Nigeria as well as how we hold rudderless APC government to account.
“We must demonstrate to Nigerians that years in opposition have not demented our will and desire to win and govern for the benefit of our country. Nigeria looks up to us to reunite this country which has been badly divided over the past 6 years.”
Speaking further on how to proffering solutions that will move the nation forward, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives said; “Where APC thrives in excuses, PDP will take responsibility. Where APC thrives in propaganda and deceit, PDP will be transparent with Nigerians. Whereas APC Government thrives in insecurity, PDP will secure Nigeria. Whereas APC presides over Nigeria as the poverty capital of the world, PDP will make Nigeria prosperous. APC has wrecked our economy, but PDP will salvage it. Where APC focuses on selective anti-corruption fight, PDP will fight corruption with appropriate institutional reforms.
“Secondly, we must embrace innovation and technology as a way of life. Technology will solve the youth unemployment time tomb. Technology will improve our agriculture, health, industrialization, education and indeed, it has implications and impacts on all facets of our lives. It is in this respect that we continue to condemn the twitter ban as a retrogressive action that should never have happened.
“Can Nigeria survive another 4 years of APC? The answer is a resounding No. It is too frightening to contemplate.”
Earlier in his welcome address, the Acting Chairman of the party, Elder Yemi Akinwonmi aid the PDP is set to assume leadership in 2023 even as he said the incoming executive must have to work together to ensure that the party can regains its lost glory.
Thousands Dump APC for PDP in Benue
Leaders of defectors from various political parties including the All Progressives Congress, APC, who decamped to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have apologised to Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State for erroneously joining forces with enemies of the state to castigate and mock him.
The leaders included erstwhile Caretaker Chairman of Gwer West Local Government Council, Hon. Hyacinth Kwegi; a House of Assembly Candidate in the 2019 general elections on the platform of the APC, Hon Ukeyima Mkem; former DGSA, Mr Titus Utuur; all tendered apologies Sunday, November 21st, 2021 at the mega decamping rally held at Naka, headquarters of Gwer West local government council.
In separate remarks at the defection of thousands into the PDP, the leaders regretted when they unsuccessfully taunted the Governor on killings in Benue by herdsmen just to support their former political parties.
They stated that despite the propaganda, most of them couldn’t vote in their villages in the 2019 elections due to the invasion by Fulani militia under the watch of the APC-led administration, stressing that some of them benefited much from the Governor but later left him without good reason.
They appreciated Governor Ortom and his wife, Dr Eunice Ortom as well as the entire PDP for accepting them back into the fold, even as they pledged unflinching support to the PDP.
Governor Samuel Ortom and his wife, Dr Eunice Ortom while receiving the decampees, assured them of equal opportunities, pointing out that in the PDP, members have equal opportunities.
The Governor stated that Nigerians will not continue to tolerate the failed leadership of the APC but takeover to provide direction for the country.
State Chairman of the PDP, Sir John Ngbede said the PDP family owes Governor Ortom prayers and unflinching support, hinting that the party will soon welcome thousands of supporters in Benue South Senatorial District.
Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Titus Uba, House of Representatives Member for Gwer-East and Gwer West, Rt Hon Mark Gbillah and Majority Leader of the Benue State House of Assembly, Hon Damian Cheme also delivered goodwill messages at the event.
Others who also spoke included Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Barr Ken Achabo and Chairman Gwer West Local Government Council, Mrs Grace Igbabon.
