From John Shiaondo, Makurdi:
A Benue business tycoon and lecturer at the University of Nigeria Nnsuka, (Chief) Dr.Terkula Suswam has said the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, must look inward and eliminate impunity and imposition of candidates to enable the party regain acceptance of the people, if it must reclaim power from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC ,come 2019.
Dr. Suswam who gave the advice in an interview with DAILY ASSET in Makurdi noted that imposition, impunity, and general lack of internal democracy practised in the party was what led to the failure of the party at the 2015 general election in the country.
He said with the end of the crisis in the party following victory by the Makarfi –led faction, the party must reorganise itself and ensure due process in selecting their leaders against selfish interest of elements in the party who have total disregard to the popular wish of the people and believe in manipulations to alter zoning arrangement.
Citing an example of the incident in his home place, logo local government area, during primaries of the last council polls in the state, the University don decry attitude of some stakeholders who are still bent on further destroying the party despite the storm that rocked the boat of the then ruling party, which resulted to its losing power to the All Progressive Congress.
“The end of crisis in the PDP is good for the party, because PDP already has structures, and will do better if they learn their lesson and follow due process in doing things in the party.
“The greatest clog in the wheels of progress in the PDP is imposition of candidate. “But I am still surprise that after the humiliating defeat the PDP suffered in the hands of the APC there are still issues of imposition and impunity practiced in the party.
“For instance, in Logo Local Government area, where I and my brother, the immediate past governor of Benue state, Gabriel Suswam are from, the zoning arrangement we made in the last council polls was altered by some so- called stakeholders, maybe for their selfish interest.
“I am from Gaambe Tiev, and the area has produced House of Representative, Governor, House of Assembly, among other positions, so during the last council polls in the state, we decided to zone chairmanship to Mbaninge, but the local government secretary of the party manipulated it and still gave the ticket to the person in my area, and I feel this is not right.
“If the Benue state electoral umpire body which was working with the Makarfi faction did not later reject their list, there would have been crisis. “I feel PDP has not yet learnt its lesson and if the party continues like this it will not be able to win the hearts of the people to emerge victorious in the 2019 general election,” he said.
On the anti-corruption war by the President Mohammadu Buhari administration, he said for the first time Nigeria has a person that is successfully waging a war against corruption.
Dr Suswam noted that corruption is one of greatest challenges Nigeria is facing and if effectively checked the nation will make greater progress.
He added: “ for the first time in the history of Nigeria, Buhari has done what napoleon did in France, during the revolution era. Nigeria’s greatest challenge is corruption and when it is effectively checked the nation’s development will progress more rapidly. Nigerians have the unenviable reputation world-wide as being corrupt people and for the fact that President Buhari has identified this problem and is fighting it, is good. “He has done very well in the area of fight corruption and I have given him a hundred percent for that but in other areas, Buhari is zero.”
