Chief Chris Giwa’s imposing physique and fast growing political influence in Plateau state tallies well with the literal translation of his name, which means elephant in Hausa.
Thursday, June 22, Chief Chris Giwa lived up to his name in Jos, the state capital when he decamped from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the opposition- People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The principle of his movement confused political watchers who reasoned that a politician of his stature should move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Giwa chose the opposite as he said he was better attracted to the PDP, which governed the North Central state from 1999-2015 before the wind of “change” blew it out of power.
Chief Giwa, a Philanthropist of repute and Proprietor of Giwa FC of Jos is not a newcomer to Plateau politics. In 2011 as governorship candidate of APGA, he posed a serious challenge to the re- election bid of then Governor, Jonah David Jang as he rallied a lot of youth to form a sizable support base. He however, lost to the PDP machine.
In his latest move, the former Guber candidate who hails from Jos South LGA is returning to the party led by Senator Jang who he unsuccessfully challenged in 2011. The formal declaration ceremony for the PDP held at Langsfield Resort, Little Ray field, turned out a re-Union of scattered PDP members in the state still leaking the wounds of defeat sustained in the 2015 elections.
The special ceremony was massively attended sending signs that the PDP may have been struck down by the APC but is certainly not out.
Women, youth and elders alike adorned in special uniforms for the occasion danced to party music to celebrate Giwa and his supporters.
At hand to receive him of course was Senator Jang, assisted by Senator Jeremiah Useni, State Party Chairman, Damishi Sango, some National and State Assembly member s and other stalwarts of the party in the state.
From the numerous speeches made by PDP leaders, it is clear that the coming into its fold of Chief Giwa inspires the party.
Chief Giwa did not make any statement about his political future leaving observers to wonder what his political interest would be as far as the 2019 election year is concerned. He merely commended Jang for his leadership of the state as Governor saying was happy to be associated with the former Governor in his new political base.
It is expected that Chief Giwa would make a statement soon about his political interest. In the meantime, the politico like a newly married is savouring his new political platform- PDP.
