Inspector General of Police,IGP Ibrahim Idris has ordered the immediate withdrawal of police officers deployed to the eight Internally Displaced PersonsCamps( IDPs) in Benue State.
Benue State governor Samuel Ortom gave the information when while interacting with newsmen in Makurdi ON Wednesday also disclosed that two persons were Wednesday attacked and killed in Guma LGA while on their farms by suspected Herdsmen.
The Police through directives investigated to be from the IGP has since last week Friday dabbled in the Political crisis in Benue between the Executive, Legislature and the State Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator George Akume, putting under siege, the Benue Assembly Complex and denying state lawmakers and even civil servants access into their office.
Ortom while speaking on the withdraw order Said, “no more details than to tell you that Police in the IDP Camps were withdrawn on the directives of the IGP. That is what I was told. I have no control over them.So You now see while my colleague in Zamfara said that he is no longer the Chief Security Officer of the State, Without recourse to me. How can Police go and seal the House of Assembly without recourse to me and as I told you in the morning, this is their plan B, that they will cause distractions and unrest in the State.”
The Benue State governor noted that with this recent Order he would convene a Security meeting where they would consider the closing of the 8 IDP camps and further mobilization of the IDPs to other safe places rather than the insecured camps hence their vulnerability to attacks.
Ortom explained that hence he has no powers as the “Chief Security Officer” of the State to direct even the police, he was left with no option but to release the 200million Naira donated by Rivers State Governor to the IDPs so as to demobilized them to their various chosen safe places.
Thousands of people displaced by incessant attacks by suspected Fulani Herdsmen in Benue State since the beginning of this year have been taking refuge in eight designated IDP Camps across the State.
