Kolo, Federal Character Commission (FCC) Member- designate Dies

Kwara state Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq said he was shocked by news of the death of Mr James Kolo, a Federal Character Commission (FCC) member – designate who died in the early hours of Tuesday.


The late Kolo died at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) after a brief illness.


He hailed from Kpada in Patigi local government area of the state.


Kolo was one of the 37 members appointed into the Federal Character Commission (FCC) by President Mohamadu Buhari in April this year.


Mallam AbdulRazaq in a Condolence message commiserated with the Patigi community and the All Progressives Congress (APC) family on the sudden death of the politician.


AbdulRazaq, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye described Kolo as a loyal member of the party and a team player whose death was a great loss to his family, the people of Patigi local government, and the entire state.


“We are devastated by the death of Mr. Kolo after recently falling ill. He was a staunch party man and a bridge builder who worked hard alongside other patriots for the success of the APC in the state.


“We are consoled by the fact that he was a good man who got along with everybody that crossed his path. Many knew him for being a generous person. We commiserate with his family and pray the Almighty God to comfort them and rest his gentle soul,” the governor said.


Speaker of the Kwara state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon.Yakubu Danladi in a statement signed by Ibrahim Sheriff, Special Assistant on Media said that he sympathized with the good people of Patigi Emirate, family, friends and associates of Mr. James Kolo, Kwara state FCC Commissioner designate, whose death was announced earlier on Tuesday. 


“It is with a rude shock that I receive news of the demise of Mr. James Kolo, who was recently announced as Commissioner designate for Federal Character Commission.


“The demise of Mr. James Kolo, who, until his death was a loyal party man, committed to the progress and development of Kwara state is a colossal loss, especially at a time his expertise and wealth of experience is sought in the Nation’s service”, Danladi added. 

“Thoughts and prayers of the 9th Kwara legislature are with  the people of Patigi and the family of the deceased. We pray Allah comfort them and grant late Kolo eternal rest”, the Speaker said.

NDLEA Urges Imo Govt to Construct Rehabilitation Centre for Psycho-depressed Youths

The Public Relation Officer (PRO) of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Alhaji Lamuwa Shehu has called on the Imo State government to construct a rehabilitation Centre for Psycho-depressed youths in Imo State.

Speaking with journalists in Owerri Imo State recently, he highlighted that Imo State is one of the States in Nigeria that has failed to construct rehabilitation centre that will mitigate the depressed youths who are victims of drug abuse

He stated that drug abuse /Trafficking in some Communities in Imo State have reached a catastrophic dimension that required urgent attention from the Law Enforcement Agencies of Nigeria.

Lamuwa projected that drug abuse and Trafficking have destroyed Youths in some Communities like Asaa, Awara, Umuokanne, in Ohaji/Egbama Local Government Area, Anara, Eziamah in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of the State.

He further disclosed that other Communities include Agwa, Izombe, Obudiagwa in Oguta Local Government Area, Irete, Ogbaku, in Owerri-North Local Government Area, Oforola Okuku, Ndegwu, Nekede, Avu and Obinze in Owerri-West Local Government Area, and Orlu Council Area of Imo State.

Lamuwa further revealed that there are three classification of drug abuse which are Narcotics, stimulant, and depressant have been discovered in high percentage in the areas under review, adding that the agency has adopted a realistic preventive mechanism to eradicate drug abuse and trafficking in Imo State.

He disclosed that drug abuse and trafficking were prohibited by Law and anybody apprehended must be sanctioned, stressing that NDLEA has invoked practical and intelligence measures to abrogate drug abuse in Imo State.

Okuama: Defence Ministers Condemn Attack, Vow to Nab Perpetrators

The Minister of Defence, Muhammed Badaru and the Minister of State for Defence Dr Muhammed Matawalle have assured Nigerians that the Federal government will spare no effort in bringing to justice killers of some military personnel on a rescue mission in Okuama Community in Delta State.

The incident occurred on Thursday, March 14, 2024, when troops of the 181 Amphibious Battalion in Okuama Community Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, responding to a crisis between Okuama and Okoloba communities in Delta State, were ambushed and killed by some irate youths in the area.

The Ministers’ reactions were contained in a statement by the Director of Press and Public Relations in the Defence ministry, Mr Henshaw Ogubike on Monday, which quoted the Ministers as saying, “we remain resolute in our pursuit of peace and tranquillity across the nation in line with the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu”.

The Ministers condemned in totality the heinous attack on the Military personnel resulting in the tragic loss of the Commanding Officer 181 Amphibious Battalion Lt Col AH Ali, two Majors, a Captain, and 12 soldiers, along with a civilian.

“This tragic incident underscores the immense sacrifices made by our servicemen and women in the defence of our nation. Their unwavering dedication and courage in the face of danger exemplify the highest ideals of patriotism and duty”, they noted.

According to the statement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Chief of Defence Staff to actively investigate this incident to ensure that those responsible for this cowardly attack face the full force of the law.

The Ministers further stated: “We affirm our unwavering commitment to safeguarding the security and well-being of all Nigerians and will not tolerate any threat to our nation’s sovereignty and stability. Additionally, we assure the Nigerian people that every effort will be made to bring the perpetrators to justice, and we remain resolute in our pursuit of peace and tranquility across the nation in line with the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu”.

Badaru and Matawalle reiterated the Federal Government’s resolve in maintaining, securing the nation and the people of Nigeria.

According to them: “Our unwavering support for the armed forces and their efforts to maintain peace and stability across the country is not negotiable. We will continue to work tirelessly towards achieving lasting peace and tranquility in every region of our dear country. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, colleagues, and loved ones of the fallen soldiers, as well as with the entire nation mourning this irreparable loss. We stand united in grief with all well-meaning Nigerians and the men and women of our armed forces during this difficult time.

The Defence Headquarters and Chief of Defence Staff have been granted full authority to bring to justice anybody found to have been responsible “for this unconscionable crime against the Nigerian people, by the President” the statement noted,

It further pointed out that “Nigerian security would be better under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s watch”, adding that “this incident would not stop the Nigerian gallant Military from performing their constitutional duty of provision of security for all Nigerians”.

Dickson Fulfils N100m Scholarship Pledge to 228 Beneficiaries

Former Governor of Bayelsa and Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, at the weekend, fulfilled an earlier pledge to fund a scholarship for indigent but brilliant students.

A total of 228 students have so far emerged as the first batch of beneficiaries of the N100m scholarship fund pledged to Hensard University, Toru-Orua by the Henry Seriake Dickson Foundation, HSDF.

The beneficiaries include 53 undergraduates and 175 Foundation students of the institution.

The announcement of the development is coming on the heels of the release of the fund, as the University is set to resume its first academic session on April 14, 2024.

A statement from HSDF said in part: “We have paid the first tranche of 100 million naira for the tuition fees of 175 foundation students and 53 undergraduates for degree programmes who were successful at the recent examinations held at the University’s campus in Bayelsa State.

“Therefore, students will not pay tuition fees throughout their studies, as they will only pay for accommodation and other relevant fees”.

Meanwhile, a statement from the University’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Sony Neme, advised all students who have been offered admission to pick up their letters and return their forms, as they would be attended to on a first come, first serve basis.

“Those who have concluded their admission formalities would be eligible for these opportunities, as the University operates on a first come, first service basis”, it said.

The statement further requested all intending students to proceed immediately to the Senate Building of the institution to formalise their admission processes.

It also reminded parents, guardians and students that the University is also in collaboration with other institutions which are ready to offer students with grants, scholarships and other facilities.

“The University is hereby notifying students that have gained admission and those seeking admission into the international institution to take advantage of the opportunity, as the university commences its admission on April 14, 2024.

“We are also announcing that all registered students who have been offered letters should pick up their letters, return their forms and begin their admission processes.

“Meanwhile, arrangements have been made by HSDF and its partners to pick up their tuition fees all through their courses till they graduate”, it further stated.
