Kolo, Federal Character Commission (FCC) Member- designate Dies

Kwara state Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq said he was shocked by news of the death of Mr James Kolo, a Federal Character Commission (FCC) member – designate who died in the early hours of Tuesday.


The late Kolo died at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) after a brief illness.


He hailed from Kpada in Patigi local government area of the state.


Kolo was one of the 37 members appointed into the Federal Character Commission (FCC) by President Mohamadu Buhari in April this year.


Mallam AbdulRazaq in a Condolence message commiserated with the Patigi community and the All Progressives Congress (APC) family on the sudden death of the politician.


AbdulRazaq, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye described Kolo as a loyal member of the party and a team player whose death was a great loss to his family, the people of Patigi local government, and the entire state.


“We are devastated by the death of Mr. Kolo after recently falling ill. He was a staunch party man and a bridge builder who worked hard alongside other patriots for the success of the APC in the state.


“We are consoled by the fact that he was a good man who got along with everybody that crossed his path. Many knew him for being a generous person. We commiserate with his family and pray the Almighty God to comfort them and rest his gentle soul,” the governor said.


Speaker of the Kwara state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon.Yakubu Danladi in a statement signed by Ibrahim Sheriff, Special Assistant on Media said that he sympathized with the good people of Patigi Emirate, family, friends and associates of Mr. James Kolo, Kwara state FCC Commissioner designate, whose death was announced earlier on Tuesday. 


“It is with a rude shock that I receive news of the demise of Mr. James Kolo, who was recently announced as Commissioner designate for Federal Character Commission.


“The demise of Mr. James Kolo, who, until his death was a loyal party man, committed to the progress and development of Kwara state is a colossal loss, especially at a time his expertise and wealth of experience is sought in the Nation’s service”, Danladi added. 

“Thoughts and prayers of the 9th Kwara legislature are with  the people of Patigi and the family of the deceased. We pray Allah comfort them and grant late Kolo eternal rest”, the Speaker said.

Tinubu Appoints new Team for Almajiri Education Commission

President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of a new leadership for the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education.

Retired Brig.-Gen. Lawal Ja’afar Isa is to serve as the Chairman of the Board of the Commission, while Dr Idris Sani is to serve as the Executive Secretary/CEO.

This is contained in a statement by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, on Monday in Abuja.

He said that Ja’afar-Isa is a respected leader and previously served as the Military Administrator of Kaduna State from 1993 to 1996.

Ngelale said Sani holds a master’s and doctorate degrees in Islamic studies and was the Director-General, Al-Iman School, Lafia; Commissioner, Basic/Secondary Education, Yobe State; and the Chairman, Nigerian Arabic Language Village, Borno State.

He is also a member, Nasarawa State Government Committee on Enlightenment Campaign, and Secretary-General, Association of Private Schools in Nasarawa state.

”The President expects that the new appointees will bring their vast experience into the management of this critical Commission, which impacts the very core of society.

They should ensure that the administration’s drive to guarantee Nigeria’s out-of-school children the most comprehensive education is realised in the superseding interest of the nation’s future,” he said.

Military Debunks Claim of Reprisal Attacks on Okuama Community

The Nigerian Military has debunked claims that it has embarked on reprisal attacks on Okuama Community in Delta.

Some members of the community had on Thursday ambushed and murdered the Commanding Officer of 181 Army Amphibious Battalion, two Majors, one Captain and 12 soldiers.

-Gen. Edward Buba, in a statement on Monday, said the community was already deserted even before troops arrived there.

Buba advised those peddling the fake news of reprisal attacks on the community to desist from further dishonouring the fallen heroes.

He said it behoves on the community leaders, elders and the people of Delta to identify the perpetrators of the murder, so that they could be brought to account for the heinous crime.

The defence spokesman said as long as the dispute between Okuama and Okoloba communities remain, it “implies that there could be untoward activities not initiated by the military”.

“Overall, there is no doubt, that this is an extremely sad development and untoward activity by members of the Okuama community against troops that were there to protect them.

“We urge the public to resist the temptation of allowing any videos of the incident of the killed personnel from going viral..

“It would be a dishonour to the fallen heroes to allow such ugly videos of their demise go viral.

“Above all, as the military mourns, it remains ever determined to ensure safety and security of citizens across the country,” he said.

Buba said it was tragic, senseless and barbaric to have killed the officers and soldiers in such a dehumanised and unspeakable manner.

According to him, while the armed forces mourns the loss of the gallant troops, there will be measured responses and injurious consequences for the perpetrators.

He consoled their families, colleagues and loved ones over the tragic incident.

Buba reminded Nigerians that the armed forces consist of citizens from every nook and cranny of the nation who had taken oath of  allegiance to put themselves in harms way to defend the country.

The defence spokesman said it was in line with this, that troops were deployed on internal security operations in about all the states of the federation to intervene, deescalate and contain security breaches.

“The ugly incident in Okuama Community in Delta is indicative of the dangers our gallant troops experience in order to secure our nation.

“The military assures that there would be measured responses and injurious consequences for the perpetrators of these dastardly act.

“Nevertheless, the armed forces being a disciplined force that complies with rules of engagement, laws of armed conflict and the respect for human rights would be tempered by these provisions.

“We would not be led by emotions, but by the rule of law,” he added. (NAN)

FG Appeals to SSANU, NASU to Call Off Warning Strike

The Federal Government has appealed to the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) to call off their seven-day warning strike.

Mrs Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Minister of State, Labour and Employment made the appeal in a statement signed by Mr Olajide Oshundun, Director of Press and Public Relations in the ministry on Monday in Abuja.

It would be recalled that the Joint Action Committee of SSANU and NASU had directed its members to embark on a seven- day warning strike over the non-payment of four months withheld salaries.

Recall that the President Bola Tinubu had in October 2023, directed that the university workers that embarked on prolonged strike in 2022 should be paid four months.

Recall also that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) who were part of the unions that embarked on the strike had been paid their own withheld four months salaries.

Onyejeocha also expressed displeasure at the action of the unions, which she described as a total disregard of Federal Government’s concerted effort to address the concern of the unions.

According to her, the Ministry was not officially notified by the unions of their intention to proceed on a seven-day warning strike.

“”This is contrary to the provisions of section 18 of the Trade Dispute Act.

“The ministry got wind of the intended warning strike and it reached out to the leadership of the unions for an emergency meeting in order to avert the strike.

“Unfortunately, a physical meeting could not be arranged between the unions and the federal government, but a tele-discussion took place between their leadership and the ministry,” she said.

Onyejeocha said that consequently, the ministry suggested another date, Monday 18th March, for a proper conciliation meeting.

She added that this was believing that on the basis of that discussion, the intended strike would be put on hold pending the outcome of the meeting; but this date was rejected by the unions.

The minister however, maintained that strike did not serve any useful purpose and should only be resorted to as a last option after exhausting every conciliation effort.

Onyejocha appealed to SSANU and NASU to step back from their hard-line stance and meet the federal government at the table for conciliation.

She however, appealed to all Nigerians to always take steps that were beneficial to the well-being of the country and the citizens. (NAN)
