With a total of 4, 927, 800 taxpayers in its database, Lagos leads the 36 states of the Federation with the highest number of taxpayers as at end of 2016, latest statistics on tax payers released by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) have shown.
Consistent with its status as the commercial nerve centre of the North, Kano came second with 1,225,568 tax payers captured in the data base, while Abia placed third with 546,827 tax payers and Plateau, fourth with 475,677 tax payers in its tax net. The fifth state with the highest number of taxpayers was Kogi with 436,130 followed by Cross River, 422,404 and Kaduna with 397,157 occupying the seventh position.

However, the number of tax payers varied from the internally generated revenues of the states as some states with the rare exception of Lagos with lower numbers of tax payers collected higher figures as IGR.
For instance, where as Lagos collected a total of N268.2billion IGR in 2015, Rivers and Delta States which had far fewer number of tax payers collected N82.1billion and N40.8billion respectively statistics showed. Ogun state followed with N34.5b; Edo raked in N19.1b while Akwa-Ibom and Anambra States collected N14.7b each during the same period.
Recent strategies laid out by the FIRS are targeted to raise the number of Nigerian tax payers to from the current 13, 034,222 to about 17 million by 2018.
To achieve this, FIRS recently announced plans to recruit 7,500 tax ambassadors who will be posted to every community in the country to educate citizens on tax matters, collate data on tax issues and indices and ensure that all taxable adults are brought into the tax net.
