One of the newly- registered political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Mega Party says having learnt from the mistakes of older political parties, it will not allow itself to be hijacked by wealthy members of the society, usually referred to as “money bags.”
The party’s Coordinating Chairman for the North Central Zone, Elder Omata Nda Onu, disclosed to DAILY ASSET in Abuja that the party will be different from the older and existing ones as “Mega Party won’t be a party for money bags, In most of the political parties in Nigeria, you pay millions to express your intention to participate in election to offices; butin Mega Party you will pay a token of N5, 000 just for the form. And this amount covers any of the offices, from local government elections, to governorship, and even to the president.”
Elder Onu said that this will be one of the sure ways the party will tackle corruption inherent in paying large amount to buy nomination forms for various offices, and sundry expenses.
According to the Coordinating Chairman, “When you ask an aspirant to pay millions just to get a form or to contest for a position, when such a person assumes office, he would want to attend to his own problems first before attending to the needs of his constituency. Under this arrangement, how then do we eradicate corruption?”
He said Mega Party will fight corruption “more genuinely than what the various leaders of the country, did and are still doing.”
“Our fight against corruption will not be limited to recovery of stolen funds alone. Our party, if voted into power, will torchlight what goes on in offices, in banks, in markets, in police, in civil service, and in various institutions…we will try to differentiate also between corruption of greed and corruption of corruption of need. We talk of corruption of greed when people are accumulating more than they need… Without doubt, corruption is the greatest problem, hindering the nation’s development.” He said apart from fighting corruption decisively, Mega Party will focus on the giving impetus to the development of agriculture, technological sector and the economy.
Elder Onu said the party will not give room for recycling of politicians, as it plans to give more give more attention to youths and women in its programmes.
He said unlike the situation where most leaders pay lip service to the welfare of youths by simply referring to them as future leaders, Mega Party will be given opportunity to lead instead of the old politicians “who are recycled to come and jeopardise the dreams of the youths.”
The North Central zonal Coordinating Chairman said towards this end, Nigerians between 18 and 35 years will be given leadership positions at various levels in the party, and in national affairs.
Elder Onu said revival of the economy was fundamental in the party’s manifesto , and this will be done through collective efforts, especially in brainstorming with Nigerians from various economic and business spheres.
“This cannot be done overnight. It will require the collective efforts of all Nigerians ,old and young, men and women. Our dependent on oil revenue has to be highly minimised .Mega Party, if voted into power will empower the youths and women through mechanized agriculture, and technological education to reduce lust for white collar jobs.Food security will be given priority so as to discourage mass influx of our people from rural to urban centres.”
