NANS Lampoons Federal Lawmakers Over Proposed Mandatory Voting Bill

By Mike Odiakose, Abuja

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Sunday took Lawmakers in the National Assembly to the cleaners over the proposed bill to make voting mandatory and jail Nigerians who fail to vote.

In a statement by NANS National Vice President, Inter-Campus and Gender Affairs, Akinbodunse Sileola Felicia, on Sunday in Abeokuta, described the bill as not only “ridiculous but laughable,” urging the NASS to ditch the ludicrous idea or face the wrath of Nigerian students.

The NASS had proposed a new bill titled ‘Bill for an Act to Amend the Electoral Act 2022 to Make it Mandatory for All Nigerians of Majority Age to Vote in All National and State Elections and for Related Matters.

If passed, the bill would make voting mandatory for all eligible Nigerians, marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s electoral landscape.

It proposes that any eligible voter who fails to vote without a valid reason would face a penalty, including a fine of N100,000, a six-month jail term, or both.

The bill, which has sparked heated debates across the country, according to NASS, aims to address voter apathy, a persistent issue in Nigerian elections and increase civic participation in the democratic process.

Akinbodunse, however, in the statement, said the proposed bill is a misplaced priority by the NASS and should be discarded accordingly.

She added that voting, which is a constitutional right of Nigerians who are eligible to vote, cannot be imposed on them, particularly when they strongly feel their votes don’t actually count.

Her words: “NANS views the proposed bill by the National Assembly to impose fines and a jail term on eligible Nigerians who do not vote as not only ridiculous but laughable.

“The bill, if passed, will make Nigeria a laughing stock among the comity of nations. Where in the world is a non-participant in an election jailed or fined?

“It is unfortunate that the NASS, which is saddled with the constitutional responsibility and duty to make laws that will ensure the development of the nation and protect its citizens, is the one proposing a bill capable of strangulating the same people.

“Instead of the NASS making laws that will strengthen our democracy and enhance the electoral processes, it has busied itself with passing a bill that will infringe on the rights of Nigerians.

“It is known by Nigerians that the country’s electoral processes are still fraught with irregularities and loopholes that give room for electoral fraud and rigging.

“This is the area NANS expects the National Assembly to work on. Rather, it has continued to make Nigerians doubt the competence and sincerity of members of both the Senate and House of Representatives.

“This proposed bill is another comedy show from the stable of the NASS. As the umbrella body of students in the country, NANS will mobilize massively against this proposed bill aimed at imposing a needless law on Nigerians.”

Akinbodunse, who declared that NANS would mobilize massively against the proposed bill, urged civil societies, organized labour, and other stakeholders to stand against the proposed legislation, which she described as “a low one from the National Assembly.”

From Ene Asuquo, Calabar

Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has maintained that the growing wave of defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is propelled by the sterling performance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu rather than political calculations.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr.

Nsa Gill, Governor Otu described the entrance of Governor Oborevwori into the APC as not just a political move but a thoughtful and courageous response to the growing aspirations for a better Delta State, a more prosperous Niger Delta, and a stronger Nigeria.

Governor Otu emphasized that Cross River, which for years stood as the lone APC-governed state in the South-South, now proudly shares the progressive banner with Delta and Edo States, marking a new dawn of strengthened political realignment in the region.

“An increasing number of South-South states under APC governance is a dream realized,” Governor Otu remarked, highlighting President Tinubu’s transformational leadership that has inspired trust, value reorientation, infrastructural rebirth, and economic rejuvenation across the nation.

Describing the mass defection led by Governor Oborevwori — with former Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa and key PDP structures in Delta as a historic moment, Otu noted that it sets the stage for deeper regional collaboration, accelerated economic development, and greater political stability.

As Vice Chairman of the South-South Governors’ Forum, Governor Otu urged Governor Oborevwori, other political stalwarts, and their supporters who have now joined the APC to bring their wealth of experience and grassroots mobilization strength to bear in advancing the collective quest for a flourishing South-South and a renewed Nigeria.

“Your Excellency’s decision to board the progressive train is a profound testament to your commitment to inclusive governance, sustainable development, and national unity. I am confident that your leadership will further galvanize our collective resolve to deliver the dividends of democracy to our people and drive forward the Renewed Hope Agenda championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Governor Otu declared.

Osun PDP Slams Hon Oke Over Defection

Published

From Ayinde Akintade, Osogbo
The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has stated emphatically that the ruling party in the state is neither surprised nor disappointed by the defection of Hon Wole Oke, member representing Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency, to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to the PDP, Oke’s decision, though unfortunate, is entirely in line with his history of erratic political behaviour and unstable loyalties.

The statement personally issued and made available by the Osun PDP Chairman, Hon Sunday Bisi said, it is public knowledge that for over two decades, Hon Oke enjoyed consistent goodwill of the PDP, securing multiple terms in the National Assembly under the party’s banner.

“Yet, rather than engage in transparent and competitive internal processes, he habitually resorted to wild goose chase, abusing privileges conferred on him by the party and the good people of Obokun/Oriade, always fighting the winds in his characteristic scheming to further his personal ambitions.

“Hon Oke has long conducted himself like a pampered political stakeholder, more interested in being spoon-fed than earning his place through rules of healthy competition” the statement reads.

“His trademark has always been orchestrated discontents and divisive tactics, never genuine in party commitment.”

“The PDP leadership has remained well ahead of his shenanigans, fully aware of his pattern of self-serving pontifications.

“His latest move only affirms what has always been evident – that he sees politics as a personal enterprise rather than a wheel of service to the people.

“As the days unfold, it will become even clearer to the world that politics is and must remain a game of the people, not a playground for selfish adventurism.

“The PDP stands firm in its values of loyalty, transparency, and service and calls on all members and lovers of the party in Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency in particular, to stay focused and united in pursuit of meaningful progress being channelled by the PDP administration of His Excellency, Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke.”
