Storie by  Francis Ogar, Calabar

The Nigeria Union of Teacher Cross River State Multi- Purpose Co-operative Society Limited (MPCS) says it has so far granted a whopping sum of Nine Hundred Million naira (N900M) to her Teachers in three years to enhance their standard of living.

NUT also said that in addition to the Loan granted, it has equally secured about 40 hectares of Land in the Southern and Central Senatorial Districts of the State and distributed 151 Plots so far to Teachers in the Southern Senatorial District.

It also disclosed that the gesture is to enable Teachers become Landlords/Landladies and also provide a financial base for them to start while in service and after retirement.

“After retirement Teachers could fall back to their savings, make use of the money to survive until when Government pays their gratuity”.

Recently, the Administrative Secretary NUT CRS MPCS, Comrade Orlando Edet  Edem told our reporter in an interview in his office that the NUT CRS MPCS had secured 6000 Plots of Lands and had granted N200,000.00 to  N500,000.00 Loan each to over 4521 Teachers in the State to enhance their standard of living.

He further said that in addition to Thrift and Credit, members save money and get back their monies after retirement with 5% interest. Comrade Edem also said that; the NUT CRS MPCS gives Loans to Teachers with very minimal interest of 10% spread across twelve (12) Months”.

Hear him “we are also into buying of Land to give to Teachers who may not be able to gather the lump sum of the money to buy the Land at a stretch. We have bought one at Mbaccoco, distributed to all members who applied and where shortlisted”.

“In the Southern Senatorial District, we have acquired 400 Plots of Land in the First (1st) Phase, and distributed 151 Parcels already.  The rest will be captured in the Second (2nd) and third (3rd) Phases”.

The Secretary further said: “they have also bought 200 Plots of Land in Ikom to be distributed to Teachers in the Central Senatorial District of the State. And also plan to secure Land in Ogoja for the Teachers in the Northern Senatorial District of the State”.

Our correspondent reports that the era when teachers have no houses of their own or land to build while in service and retirement is now reversed by the Nigeria Union of Teachers Cross River State Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society Limited (NUT CRS MPCS).
