Benue state Governor, Samuel Ortom, has described as laughable and illegal his impeachment process as instigated by the impeached Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Hon Terkimbi Ikyange and 6 other members of the Benue State House of Assembly.
The Benue State governor also described as baseless, the allegations by same click of lawmakers that he has misappropriated bailout and Paris Club refund amounting to Billions of naira.
Ortom in a swift reaction to the Monday’s impeachment attempt by the impeached Speaker also accused the Iinspctor General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris for promoting impunity across the State without the knowledge of president Muhammadu Buhari through the deployment of Police Officers to manhandle lawful citizens and also provide cover to the 7 lawmakers to perpetrate illegality.
The Benue State governor similarly accused his estranged godfather, Sen. George Akume of facilitating the impunity orchestrated by the Police and called on President Muhammadu to stop the spat of impunity in the State and save the nation’s democracy from total destruction.
He noted that defection was not an offense against democracy, wondering why his defection to the PDP has sparked such illegal actions and false allegations.
A minority of 7 Benue lawmakers out of 30 members including the recently impeached Speaker of Benue Assembly, Terkimbi Ikyange had early Monday, considered the impeachment of Governor Samuel Ortom on the grounds of Misappropriation of public funds and poor governance. They also suspended the significant 22 other members of the Assembly for misconduct
The 7 lawmakers who considered the impeachment motion against the Benue State governor while briefing Journalists expressed optimism that Governor Ortom will be impeached in Seven days time.
Meanwhile, the 22 lawmakers led by the new Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Hon Titus Ubah later convened at the Benue Peoples House where they Suspended the Seven members for six months.
The 22 members who unanimously described the resolutions reached by the 7 other members of the Benue Assembly as point less and highly illegal, called on the public to disregard such illegality as 7 members out of 30 were too insignificant to decide for the house.
The house also called on the international community and other Stakeholders to rise up and secure Nigeria’s democracy from brazen impunity and total sabotage.
DAILY ASSET learnt that the sitting of the 7 Benue lawmakers under the cover of heavily armed police men was without the clerk of the Assembly neither was there a Mace as required by the rules of the House and consistent with national and international parliamentary practices.
