From Mohammed Muktar Umar, Bauchi

Determined to protect the environment from the adverse effect of the ravaging climate change in the world, a non-governmental organisation, Oxfam Line Project, has flagged off the second phase of tree planting campaign activities in Bauchi State.

Speaking during an event to officially flag off the second phase  in Darazo, Gamawa and Shira Local Government Areas of the state, Oxfam Line Project Manager, Wayne Brook, informed that a total of 9,000 economic and environmentally friendly trees were to be planted.

According to him, the first phase was a success, saying that the NGO was grateful for this.

Brook, who was represented by the Environmental Compliance Officer of Oxfam Line Project, Kenneth Akpan, disclosed that distributed 9,000 tree seedlings were distributed during the first phase of the campaign in Ningi, Alkaleri and Tafawa Balewa LGAs.

Brook informed that Bauchi State was one of the 11 front line states in the country susceptible to desertification and its attendant effects.

He, however, lamented that apart from the annual tree planting campaigns embarked upon by the state, no other effective measures is being taken by state government to halt the threat of desertification.

“In 2010, Bauchi State Government was alarmed that the state was losing an average of one kilometre of its landmass annually to desertification, which it attributed to the indiscriminate felling of trees for fuel and local charcoal production businesses.

“Apart from the annual tree planting campaigns embarked upon by the state, there have really been no effective measures by any state administration to halt the threat of desertification,” Brook said.

He explained that his organisation was promoting trees planting in communities and encouraging its adaptation by communities in order to upscale them into ideas like woodlots, orchards or commercial horticulture, to improve on the environment and the economic outlook of the communities.

He added that being a climate change conscious project, while executing its activities within the state, Oxfam Line Project discovered prevailing climatic conditions due to poor environmental knowledge and practices.

This, according to Brook, had harmed the environment and climatic conditions of the state through floodings, which washed away farmlands and crops and in some instances houses, particularly on floodplains, drop in rainfall with its negative impact on food production.

Speaking at the flag off campaign in Darazo, the chairman of Darazo LGA, Honourable Mahmood Bello Yayaji, commended Oxfarm Line Project for the tree planting campaign in the area.

On his part, the chairman of Gamawa LGA, Honourable Babayo Ahamed Kasuwa, said the gesture would go a long way to arrest desertification in the area.

“This gesture by Oxfarm Line Project would go a long way to arrest the incursion of the Sahara desert into our communities.

“The trees that are being planted today if nurtured to grow fully will curb the ravaging heat affecting our people in Gamawa LGA

“We are really grateful to them and hope more of such gesture will be brought here by other organisations that we are ready to partner with till there are trees everywhere in Gamawa LGA,” he said.

By Laide Akinboade, Abuja
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, haom Wednesday,  expressed satisfaction with the quality and speed of the ongoing road constructions in Kuje, Kuje Area Council.
The roads that were inspected by the Minister included, the six-lane dual carriageway from Airport Expressway to Kuje Junction and the five-kilometre dual carriageway from Garage Junction to LEA Secretariat, in Kuje.

The minister explained that the five-kilometre dual carriage way from Garage Junction to LEA Secretariat was nominated by the council’s chairman and stakeholders in the area.

He said that the contractor has done earth work covering 2.
5 kilometres, adding that what would follow was the drainage.
According to the Minister, “The Area Council Chairman and the stakeholders in Kuje were the ones that nominated this road. And the road is 5 kilometers and just like what the contractor said, they started from where they have difficulty so that by the time they get to where there is consent they would have sorted out the issues.
“From what they have said today, they have done the earthwork to 2 kilometers and they said before the end of the year they would have completed this particular road.
“And the one from the airport to Kuje city here, which is being handled by the Arab contractors, you can see that their work is going on very well.
“And with the quality of work we are quite satisfied too. The contractor said before the end of the year they would have completed the earthwork. It gladdens our heart that we are meeting our targets.”
Earlier, Mr Shehu Ahmad, Executive Secretary, Federal Capital Development Authority, said that the road, linking the Airport Expressway to Kuje township would cover 11 kilometres.
Ahmad explained that between the airport expressway to Kuje junction, the road would cross over two rivers and also cross over the Outer Southern Expressway that would link the city centre with Gwagwalada Expressway.
He added that the Airport Expressway to Kuje Junction would cover nine kilometres, while the remaining two kilometres would extend backward towards Kyami District.
He explained that one of the major constraints affecting the delivery of the road was the presence of five towers belonging to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) along the road corridor.
The FCDA boss added that TCN have been contacted and have agreed to relocate the towers, stressing that until the obstructions were removed, work could not take place in the affected areas.
