Public Complaints Commission Laments Poor Funding

By Jude Dangwam, Jos

Commissioner of Public Complaints Commission in Plateau State, Alhaji Musa Abdullahi has lamented that financial constraints is negatively affecting the Commission’s activities.

Abdullahi said the Commission before now received N1,000,000 to N2,000.000 million as overhead cost but at the moment only N400,000 or less comes in a month as overhead cost.

He made this known recently during an interview with Journalists in his office at the Federal Secreteriat in Jos the State capital

“Our challenges is as that of many ministries agencies and paratatals, our commission here operate without revenue. We don’t charged people who brought complain here. And you can see that when we are going on investigation of any case it involves money.

“Unfortunately, since I came on board unlike before that the Commission use to have N1m to N2m overhead cost in a month, but today since I came on board here the highest “AIA”(Overhead) we received is N400,000 in a month, sometimes N200,000 and you emerging even the allowances of staff here N200,000 cannot take care of that.

“Right now, as I am telling you, this Commission is owning staff a lot of money ranging from allowances and whatever,” he stated

He said the Commission from 2015 to date has recorded over 2000 complains and have resolved 696 cases.

“Since I came on board, 695 cases were resolved, there are cases that sometimes we have to go to a far distance like Abuja, Lagos, Kaduna among many. Sometimes we transfer cases across to another State for easy attention if the person is been transferred or relocated to another state.”

Alhaji Abdullahi said Plateau State has 7 zonal offices across the State; they are: Bassa, Barkin-Ladi, Jos-South, Mangu, Pankshin, Langtang-North, Shendam and Wase LGAs that enable citizens to launched in their complains at no cost.

“We don’t collect a single penny even if the investigation is taking us to Lagos and seriously the less privilege have benefited with the activities of this Commission I must say.”

He further maintained that, “In some cases people have problem with government, we sit with them and in turned get the government together with the complainers and settled them at the end of the day both parties go home happily.

“If you are on pension with the government and they refuse to pay you if you bring that to us we will pusure the case and ensure that government pay you your entitlements.

“Any entitlement, be it your salary is been stopped wrongly by government or private establishment, we ensure government or that private organization pay you.

“Even land disputes, if you have them just come to the Commission and we will treat them and settled you people amicabily without any recourse of going to Court, we cover a wide range of cases here in this Commission.”

Abddulahi explained that, “We are not a court of law but we are saddle with the responsibility of building bridges so that you don’t need to go to court before you settle disputes.”
