Plateau United FC emerged as DAILY ASSET SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR for the excellent feat of winning the Nigeria Professional Football League in 2017.
Established in 1975, Plateau United was formerly known as JIB Rocks FC. The Team adopted the current name in 1991 and since has been involved in the Nigeria football league in various divisions. The team tutored by Coach Kennedy Boboye was promoted to the Premiership in 2015.
The Jos-based club wholly owned by the Plateau State Government launched an ambitious campaign to win the league title in 2017 and worked hard towards it-thanks to the unwavering support of the State Governor, Simon Bako Lalong who made sure the finances were made available to prosecute the campaign. And it paid off.
On Saturday September 9, 2017 at the Rwang Pam Stadium, Jos, Plateau United clashed with the 2016 league Champions, Rangers International FC of Enugu. The Jos side needed a draw to win but with two goals in its kitty at the end of 90 minutes of regulated time of play, the Jos side smiled home with a decisive victory and took away the NPLF Shield, the first time in its 42-year history.
For recording this feat, DAILY ASSET Board of Editors chose Plateau United FC as “SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR 2017.”
