Troops of the Joint Task Force Southeast (JTF SE) Operation UDO KA have foiled a suspected kidnap attack and rescued five victims during a rapid night response at the 9th Mile axis within the 82 Division Area of Responsibility.

The operation, which took place at about 6:55 p.

m.
on February 20, 2026, followed a distress call reporting an alleged attack by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network, on commuters travelling toward Anambra State.

According to a statement released by the task force, troops immediately mobilised to the scene upon receiving the alert. On arrival, they engaged the armed assailants in a firefight, deploying what officials described as superior firepower and tactical manoeuvres.

The swift response reportedly overwhelmed the attackers, forcing them to abandon their captives and flee into nearby bushes. Five kidnapped victims were rescued unhurt, and their vehicle was recovered intact.

Military authorities said troops have since intensified aggressive patrols and area domination operations to prevent the suspects from regrouping and to track down those who escaped. The sustained security presence, they added, is aimed at denying criminal elements freedom of action and reassuring residents and commuters along the route.

The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and securing critical transport corridors across the Southeast, urging citizens to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to enhance ongoing operations.

Operation UDO KA is part of broader efforts by security forces to curb violent activities and dismantle criminal and terrorist networks in the region.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, said success in counter-terrorism operations was no longer determined by single-service efforts but by joint, multi-agency collaboration and coordinated action.

Shaibu said this at the opening of the 2026 Simulating Training workshop, organised by the Land Forces Simulation Centre (LFSC), on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said that the training workshop aimed to enhance troops’ adaptability and operational readiness.

The workshop has the theme ”Leveraging Joint and Multi Agency Capabilities to Strengthen Troops’ Adaptability and Resilience during Counter Terrorism and Counter Insurgency Operations”.

Represented by the Commander, Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command (NACWC), Maj.

-Gen. Kennedy Osemwegie, he also said that the workshop would allow troops to formulate and test operational plans without logistical constraints or fatigue.

”It is a strategic asset for realistic, technology-driven, and cost-effective training,” he said.

The COAS urged participants to engage actively, challenge assumptions, and deepen understanding of intelligence fusion, civil-military cooperation, and inter-agency coordination to ensure mission success.

He said the workshop aligned with the Nigerian Army’s transformation drive to build a professional, adaptable and combat-ready force capable of operating effectively in joint and multi-agency environments.

He thanked President Bola Tinubu for his support and reaffirmed the loyalty of the Nigerian army to defending the nation’s sovereignty.

Earlier, the Director-General of LFSC, Maj.-Gen. Mohammed Wabili, said the training workshop was timely given the complex and evolving security threats facing the country.

Wabili said that addressing such threats required not only tactical proficiency but also strong collaboration among the Armed Forces, security agencies and other stakeholders.

”The Nigerian Army-led counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations demand synergy, interoperability and a shared understanding of operational challenges.

”It is through such collaborative efforts that we can strengthen the adaptability and resilience of our troops in the face of evolving threats,” he said.

He added that the centre remained committed to providing a modern platform for capacity development through simulation-based training.

According to him, simulation enables commanders and troops to rehearse operational scenarios, enhance decision-making and test operational concepts in a controlled but realistic environment.

He urged participants to actively engage in discussions and share experiences that would enrich the outcomes of the workshop.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested 16 suspects over alleged involvement in various criminal activities.

The NSCDC Public Relations Officer (PRO), Afolabi Babawale, disclosed this at a news briefing on Monday in Abuja.

Babawale said that the suspects were arrested over offences ranging from unlawful possession of firearms, fabrication of local firearms, and criminal conspiracy.

Other offences, he said, were printing of counterfeit U.

S. dollar notes, obtaining by false pretence, criminal trespass, suspected kidnapping and illegal mining activities.

He said that the successful operations were carried out by the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad (CG’s SIS), personnel from Kano command and operatives stationed at BUA Cement Company, Etsako East LGA of Edo State.

According to him, a suspect who belonged to a syndicate that disguised as private security guards was arrested in Kano State in possession of six new locally fabricated rifles.

He said that in another operation, a-39 year old male who specialises in the production of locally made weapons and allegedly sells to kidnappers, bandits, insurgents, and other criminals was arrested.

“Exhibits used in the production recovered from him include six improvised gun pipes, three improvised fire selectors, six saw blades, 12 hand files, hammer, screwdrivers, pliers, bicycle fenders, pieces of sandpaper, knives, among others.

“He also confessed to selling firearms to a male suspect who is currently in our custody,” he said.

The CG’s SIS Commander, Apollos Dandaura, while giving detailed information, said that one of the suspects was arrested over printing counterfeit U.S. dollar notes and fake 600,000 U.S. dollars.

“He also obtained money by false pretence after issuing fake dollars amounting to 6,200 dollars to a victim at an exchange rate of N1, 452, having earlier obtained N9 million from the victim.

“He has in possession large quantity of substance suspected to be charms, 10 empty chemical containers, travel ticket to Cameroon, chemicals used in counterfeiting, plain sheets and security ID card bearing his name.

“Others are GTBank and Zenith ATM cards and other personal items were in his possession,” Dandaura revealed.

The commander said that other suspects were arrested over various other offences; including, illegal mining activities and suspected kidnap operations.

NSCDC Commandant General, Ahmed Audi, commended the squad personnel for their display of gallantry and professionalism in carrying out their duties.

Audi, however, expressed concerns over the increasing involvement of young and middle-aged individuals in kidnapping, arms deals, illegal mining, and other acts of economic sabotage.

”Under my leadership, the corps will not treat any act of economic sabotage with kid gloves, as these offences constitute serious threats to national security and stability,” he said.

He directed the CG’s SIS to intensify investigations, identify all sponsors and ensure that suspects at large were apprehended and brought to book.

The NSCDC boss gave assurance that all cases would be prosecuted diligently to serve as deterrent, while also appreciating the public for consistently supporting the corps with information.

He called for stronger collaboration and credible intelligence sharing to rid communities of criminal elements.
