According to the National Universities Commission (NUC), the country today has no fewer than 152 universities. Of this figure, 40 are Federal Universities, 44 are owned by states, while the private universities account for 68.Standing proudly tall among them is a private university, Afe Babalola University (ABUAD), Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti state which is a non-profit private university . It was founded by renowned lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). and philanthropist, Afe Babalola, in 2009.
The University offers academic programmes in six Colleges: Sciences, Law, Engineering, Social and Management Sciences, Medicine and Health Sciences, and Postgraduate Studies. It graduated its first set of students in 2013. The Afe Babalola University holds reputation for being one of the few Nigerian universities to begin academic works in the campus’ permanent site.
What is more, at a time most universities are finding it difficult to expand, Afe Babalola University has built its own ultra-modern teaching hospital, reputed to be the best of its kind in Nigeria. It has also entered into partnership with John Hopkins University, Baltimore, US, which makes it possible for the two institutions to exchange personnel and programmes.
The University is reputed for its sterling academic programmes as well as discipline, which was made possible by the fact that all its students are boarders. In an era where cultism and other vices have held down many of our institutions from making the desired progress, Afe Babalola does not have history of cultism in any form as a result of strict enforcement of discipline. The growing reputation and stature of the university is made possible by its founder, Chief Afe Babalola, a Nobel Prize nominee.
For being a world class university opreated on the principle of not for profit and the continuous invstment towards its expansion to enhance the country’s educational development. DAILY ASSET Board of Editors chooses Afe Babalola Univeristy as “UNIVERSITY OF THE YEAR 2017.”
