By Mohammed Muktar Umar Bauchi
Acute water scarcity has hit part of Bauchi State’s capital, especially the Federal Lowcost Housing Estate and its surrounding communities of Bauchi metropolis .Our Correspondent who went round the neighborhood reports that residents are lamenting the scarcity of water supply saying that it even marred the last sallah festive for them.
Hajiya Hafsatu Abubakar, a resident of Federal low cost housing estate who spoke to DAILY ASSET complained that the scarcity came at time the people needed water the most considering the volume of activities that usually accompanied such periods. “As a house wife, my demand for water is greater at this period more than regular days, unfortunately we are now faced with this scarcity that is making the Sallah celebration tiring for me and my children because my children spent so much hours looking for water from our neighbors boreholes”, she said.
While lamenting their plight, Hajiya Hafsat appealed to the Bauchi state Water board to, as a matter of urgency, release the supply of water to ease the hardship being faced by Federal Lowcost residents.
Mallam Mahmud Ghani another resident of Federal lowcost Bauchi also said that except for the none supply of water, the Sallah festivities could have been perfect. “As a household head, I go out looking for Water from our neighbor’s borehole in the early hours of the morning to avoid long queue of residents that are also in need of water for their daily needs. It was not like this some years back. Federal lowcost residents were the envy of other residents of Bauchi metropolis because of our constant supply of water, but it is no longer the case now”, Ghani wondered.
Also speaking to our Correspondent, Bala Mohammad of Nasarawa Quarters in the metropolis said water supply comes only twice a week. “Water board only supplies us with water twice a week for 2 hours. “ Although Water board supply us with water two times a week, they did not supply us during the Sallah period”.
In her words another residents of Federal Low cost, Maman Aliyah said “the last time we got Water was one week ago”.
Reacting to the complains of the Federal Lowcost residents, the General Manager of the Bauchi State Water Board, Engineer Aminu Aliyu Gital said the Water scarcity in Federal Lowcost and its surrounding communities may not be unconnected with the board’s tradition of releasing its water to the entire metropolis during Sallah festivities and thus reducing the supply to the suburbs.
“On normal days we ration the supply of water to some areas of the state capital according to days, but during festivities we supply to the entire metropolis because of heavy demand for water at such periods and this may result in some neighborhood not getting the supply as they should, but as the festivities are gradually coming to an end, the normal system of rationing water supply will commence and water supply would be normal again”, Engineer Gital assured.
