From Sylvia Udegbunam- Enugu
The leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo has denied endorsing the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar for the February 16 presidential election. This statement was made by the national deputy publicity secretary Chuks Ibegbu during a media chat at Ohaneze Ndigbo National Secretariat in Enugu on Wednesday.
Ibegbu stated that Ohaneze Ndigbo was a neutral body and can only identify with candidates that are ready to restructure Nigeria.
He called on Ndigbo to identify with the candidates that are ready to restructure Nigeria which is the Ohaneze Ndigbo stand on the coming election.
He appealed to Ndigbo to individually support Ohaneze Ndigbo in their various project, and also appealed to South East governors to support the forum without any attachment as Ohaneze Ndigbo is a neutral body that is not affiliated to any party.
Marking the two years anniversary of the present national executives of the Ohaneze Ndigbo under the leadership of its president general, Chief Nnia Nwodo, Ohaneze Ndigbo noted it has made some modest achievements which included:
the restoration of the dignity of the Igbo race in Nigeria and across the globe: promotion of Igbo language, culture and heritage. The establishment and promotion of Ohaneze Ndigbo activities at local, state, national and diaspora levels; building of bridges with other ethnic nationalities in Nigeria; initiation and pursuit of the restructuring of Nigeria, a position that has become a national mantra.
Others include the diplomatic and deft handling of explosive issue of the quit notice to Ndigbo by northern youth; the pro-biafran agitation; Fulani herdsmen /farmers crisis in Igbo land; the military’s Operation Python Dance and many other threatening issues that would have snowballed to a national disaster.
Ibegbu said the Ohaneze leadership was also able to build synergy with its affiliate groups like IDA, IWA,WIC, AKa Ikenga, Izu-Umunna, Njiko-Umunna, Igbo Media Forum and other organisations to leverage igbo unity and development.
The Ohaneze Ndigbo leadership he said has also encouraged unity and synergy among Igbo governors and political actors for the overall interest of Ndigbo and has also put in place formidable youth and women wings for the organisation.
