West African Badminton Circuit opens in Abidjan
The Annual West African Badminton Circuit will hold from June 29 – July 2, in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The competition is meant to popularize the game in West. Africa and increase the sub- region’s chances of winning continental and international tournaments in future.
The Nigerian contingent to the tournament has already arrived camp at the National Stadium Abuja in preparation towards winning the trophies. . The country’s frontline Players already in camp are Enejoh Abbah, Gideon Babalola, Clement Krobako and Habeeb Bello and Kayode Mope while Peace Orji is the only female player who has so far reported in camp. Other junior players who are also in camp to struggle for available slots in the country’s team include Daniel Philips, Shola Abiodun, Ramatu Yakubu and Moses Babatunde, The players are being prepared by former African Number two player, Ola Fabgbemi And ex- international Strategist, Abbas Adamu.
The West African Circuit will move to Cameroon on July 9 while Ghana will host the West African top players in Accra in the same month. In the same vein, Lagos will take its turn in August with the Lagos International which could not hold last year due to logistic constraints faced by the Local Organising Committee(LOC).
Technical Assistant and Match Strategist to the Nigerian team, Adamu told Daily Asset that his team was in high spirit and hopes to make a good showing in the competition.
“We are the team to beat as far West Africa is concerned. Don’t forget that we won the All Africa Games Bronze medal and our players are in top form” he stressed.
Adamu however, lamented the dearth of funds to provide for the players’ basic needs while in the camp and appealed to lovers of the game and other stakeholders to come to the assistance of the players to enable them successfully prosecute the camp Programme. “ As you know the BFN board has been dissolved, so we need people who can step in with support to our team” he stressed.
