Women Dev. Centre Trains 2,000 Women on Tilling, Carpentry, Others
The National Centre for Women Development has trained more than 2,000 women in carpentry, tilling and POP making as part of an initiative by the centre to empower women nationwide.
The Director-General of the centre, Mrs Mary Ekpere-Eta, made the disclosure at a news conference on Monday in Abuja.
Ekpere-Eta, who was speaking with newsmen on the achievements of the centre in the past four years, said that she was keen on fostering women empowerment against the backdrop of the negative impact of COVID-19 on women.
She said that she had commenced an empowerment tour of the six geo-political zones to assist women to scale-up their businesses.
The director-general explained that the tour which commenced from Cross River in the South-South would train women on new skills to make them self-sufficient and pull them out of poverty.
“At the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were at the front lines. Our centre was used as quarantine centre and we did not complain and everything was properly managed.
“Now at post-COVID-19, we are training women to bring them out of poverty, especially those ones that have lost their source of incomes during COVID-19.
“We have empowered many women in Cross River. We are going to the North East then the other geo-political zones with our empowerment programmes.
“We will train the women on poultry, fishing, tailoring, soap-making, among other vocations.”
Ekpere-Eta said that the centre had also developed a gender-based violence dashboard which had been used to track sexual offenders with a view to prosecuting them.
She said that the centre had also collaborated with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to train women in various aspects of agriculture, saying that up to 1,000 women had benefited from the scheme.
Ekpere-Eta lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for his interest in women issues, stating that his administration had paid serious attention to women empowerment.
She said that the Buhari administration was the first to adopt the bottom-top-approach whereby women were taken into consideration in various interventions to cushion the effects of poverty.
The director-general, however, called for more support to the centre for it to achieve its mandate and set goals. (NAN)

NERC Paints Gloomy Picture of Power Sector
By Ubong Ukpong Abuja
Chairman of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Sanusi Garba yesterday told the House of Representatives that government would spend a whopping N3.2 trillion to subsidize electricity in 2024 if the recent increase in tariff is reversed.Garba was speaking at a stakeholders meeting convened by the House of Representatives Committee on Power, where he said that current investments in the sector are not enough to guarantee a steady power supply.
He said if nothing concrete is done to address issues in the sector including Foreign Exchange fluctuation and non-payment for gas, the sector will be heading for doom. He explained that before the recent review in tariff, DISCOS were only obligated to pay 10 percent of their energy invoice, adding that the lack of cash backing for subsidy is creating a liquidity challenge in the sector. The NERC boss said that as a result of the non-payment of subsidy, gas supply and power generation have continued to dip, adding that the continuous decline of generation and system collapse are largely linked to liquidity challenges. He explained that before the recent review in tariff, DISCOS were only obligated to pay 10 percent of their energy invoice, adding that the lack of cash backing for subsidy is creating a liquidity challenge in the sector. He achieving cost-effective tariffs is key to the sustainability of the sector. He explained that between January 2020 and January 2023, the tariff increased from 55 percent of the cost to 94 percent of cost recovery, adding that “the unification of FX and current inflationary pressures are pushing cost reflective tariff to N184/kWh.He said, “If sitting back and doing nothing is the way to go, it would mean that the National Assembly and the executive would have to provide about N3.2 trillion to pay for subsidy in 2024.”Garba said that only N185 billion of the N645 billion subsidy in 2023 had been cash-backed, leaving a funding gap of N459.5 billion.Vice chairman of NERC, Musiliu Oseni who also justified the recent increase in tariff said the increment was needed to save the sector from total shutdown.NEWS
