….Says Presidency Should be Zoned to the South
By Jude Opara
As politicians continue to strategize ahead of the 2023 presidential election, Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has been advised to drop his presidential ambition and instead join forces with other North Central stakeholders to enable the region produce the next National Chairman of the party.
Addressing the media in Abuja on Thursday, leader of the North Central Council of APC, Kassim Muhammad the zone is primed to produce the National Chairman of the party because of the three regions in the country, the North West has President Muhammadu Buharki who still has two years to the end of his presidency and the North East has produced the Senate President in the person of Ahmed Lawan.
“The North Central Council is equally appealing to the Governor of Kogi State, Governor Yahaya Bello to have a rethink over his 2023 presidential ambition as it will be fair in the spirit of one Nigeria to allow the southern part of the country to produce the next president come 2023.
“We strongly believe that conceding the presidential ticket of our party, the APC to the southern part of the country would enhance equity and political justice. We believe that the Kogi State Governor is a true Democrat who beliefs in one Nigeria.
“We are therefore appealing to Governor Yahaya Bello to drop his presidential ambition, and join us in the campaign to ensure that the North Central produces the next APC national chairman.”
He decried the idea where members of the House of Assembly in the zone abandoned their constitutional role and were touring the country canvassing support for the presidential ambition of Governor Bello.
Muhammad also called on the party faithful to support the Governor Mai Mala Buni led Caretaker Committee to continue to pilot the affairs of the party, saying the party has benefited greatly from his style of leadership.
“The party led by Governor Mai Mala Buni has done so much in healing the wounds of the past by reconciling the various factions in most affected States.
“The APC under Governor Buni’s leadership has witnessed peace and daily influx of members of the opposition political parties into the fold of the APC across the country, we can not thank the Yobe State Governor enough for strengthening the party and providing credible leadership.
“The Buni leadership was able to woo a sitting Governor of a State under the PDP platform with all the structures of the party into the fold of the APC, the governor of Ebonyi State, Engr David Umahi, also he was able to bring into the fold of the party two former Speakers of the House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara and Dimeji Bankole, as well as former Ogun State governor, Gbenga Daniel.”
