2025: Nasarawa in Focus as Political Season Unfolds

From Abel Zwànke, Lafia
In the year 2025, the political landscape in Nasarawa State is being shaped by intense strategic maneuvering. Politicians are preparing for what promises to be a fiercely contested race in 2027, when the current governor, Engineer Abdullahi Sule, will complete his term.
The scramble for his successor has already begun, with numerous aspirants positioning themselves as the next leader of the state. But among these, one figure stands out as the front-runner: Musa Ahmed Mohammed. As the state approaches the 2027 governorship elections, Nasarawa is witnessing a political awakening. Candidates from both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are vying for the top job. The race is not just about political ambition; it’s about connecting with the people, addressing their needs, and proving to them that they can be trusted to lead.In Nasarawa, the stakes are high. As the state continues to develop, political aspirants are keen to demonstrate their ability to drive growth, build infrastructure, and improve the livelihoods of citizens. While some have been visible in public life, others remain relatively unknown outside political circles. The electorates, however, are becoming more discerning and are unlikely to reward candidates who are perceived as distant or disconnected from the everyday realities of the people.Among the aspirants vying to succeed Governor Sule, there are several noteworthy names. These include figures such as Dr. Fiasal Shuaib, the former executive chairman of the Primary Health Care Development Agency, and Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada, a prominent lawmaker in the red chambers of the national assembly under the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Other contenders include Architect Shehu Tukur, Abu Giza, and Mohammad Maikaya, all of whom have their own networks and support bases. But despite the strong presence of these candidates, it’s Musa Ahmed Mohammed who seems to be gaining the most traction. The current Accountant General of Nasarawa State, Musa has proven his political mettle in various roles, including as Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly. His track record of effective leadership, humility, and approachability has earned him the respect of many, and his candidacy is quickly gaining momentum.Musa’s Mohammed’s experience in governance and his ability to connect with people set him apart from other aspirants. His tenure as Speaker saw him navigate the challenging political waters of the state, maintaining a delicate balance between the executive and the legislature. This experience has made him a familiar and trusted figure, among the people of Nasarawa Local Government Area, where he hails from and the state at large. One of the key factors driving Musa’s popularity is his humility and accessibility. Unlike some politicians who only appear during election seasons, Musa has consistently made efforts to engage with the people, listening to their concerns and offering solutions. This has endeared him to many, particularly those who feel neglected by the political elite. His approachability, combined with his solid understanding of governance, both as former speaker and the current Accountant General positions him as a strong contender for the 2027 election. While Musa’s candidacy is gaining traction, other aspirants are not backing down. Dr. Fiasal Shuaib, for instance, has indicated his interest in the governorship. Another significant player in the race is Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada. A member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).In addition to Musa, Shuaib, and Wadada, there are other names circulating in the political circles, each with their own support base and aspirations. Architect Shehu Tukur, for example, is an influential figure from Keffi Local Government Area, while Mohammad Maikaya, a former governorship aspirant, is working to build a wider political network. Meanwhile, Abu Giza’s bid for the governorship is still largely untested, and his political influence remains confined to the southern senatorial district. The PDP, which has been out of power in Nasarawa for over 14 years, also has its sights set on reclaiming the governorship. The party’s main candidate is former House of Representatives member Hon. David Emmanuel Ombugadu. However, the party has struggled with internal divisions, and many stakeholders remain uncertain about its ability to mount a serious challenge in 2027.Despite the challenges facing the PDP, its leadership is determined to make a strong push for the governorship. However, the party’s chances will depend on its ability to unite its factions and build a coalition capable of taking on the APC. At present, the PDP’s position in the state remains fragile, and many observers believe that it may struggle to regain the trust of the electorate. As the race for 2027 heats up, the question on everyone’s mind is whether any of these aspirants can match Ahmed Musa’s growing influence and appeal. While many of the candidates have their strengths, Musa’s combination of political experience, humility, and grassroots support give him a significant advantage. The outcome of the 2027 elections will ultimately depend on which candidate can best connect with the people of Nasarawa. While the APC and PDP are locked in a battle for supremacy, it is clear that the people are looking for a leader who understands their needs and is committed to their welfare. For now, Musa Ahmed Mohammed appears to be the candidate to beat. His ability to unite the various factions within the APC and his track record of public service make him a strong contender. If he continues to build on his momentum and maintain his strong relationship with the people, he could very well emerge as the next governor of Nasarawa State. As the political season unfolds, all eyes will be on Nasarawa, where the battle for the state’s top office is set to intensify. Whether it is Musa Mohammed, Senator Wadada, or one of the other candidates, the next few years will be critical in shaping the future of Nasarawa State. The people are watching closely, and they will decide who is best equipped to lead them into the future. The 2027 governorship race in Nasarawa is shaping up to be one of the most interesting and competitive in the country. With numerous candidates vying for the top spot, the outcome is far from certain. However, one thing is clear: the political landscape in Nasarawa is changing, and the people are ready for a leader who can bring real change and progress to the state. As the election year draws closer, the candidates will have to work hard to win the trust of the people. But in a state as politically dynamic as Nasarawa, anything can happen. The 2027 election will be a defining moment for the state, and the stakes could not be higher. Will Musa Ahmed Mohammed emerge as the next governor of Nasarawa, or will another contender rise to the challenge? Only time will tell, but for now, the race is on.

ADC will Give Us The Nigeria Of our Dream — FMR Governorship Candidate

By Ene Asuquo, Calabar
A former Governorship Candidate in the 2023 elections in Cross River State, Mr Effiong Efa Nyong has declared that the African Democratic Congress ADC will give Nigerians the Country of their dream with a respectable leader like Senator David Mark as the Party National Chairman.
He said the welcome of the coalition of political parties and ADC as a political force has been awesome especially at a time when Nigerians became very scared that the country was drifting into a one party state, occasioned by the gale of endorsements and defections into the ruling party in the country and the dictatorial tendencies of the Tinubu led administration.
Nyong averred that with ADC now as a viable opposition that is ready to change the narrative, is a development that have given hope to Nigerians that a new Nigeria is possible
He stressed that the momentum set by the new National Chairman, Senator David Mark as he takes over the mantle of leadership of the Party with a determination to give good governance to Nigerians through the human oriented policies of ADC in his inaugural speech.
“The turmoil, rancour and litigations in the labour party (LP)also became very scary, therefore the emergence of the African Democratic Congress(ADC) as a political force and coalition platform after months of speculation brought a huge relief to Nigerians, who have become hopeful all over again”, he stated.
He expressed disappointment over the heightened sense of arrogance and impunity displayed by some government appointees of the APC government and in total disregard for the laws of the land
According to him; “The same situation brought about the emergence of local strongmen, who undermined the sincerity of purpose and true sense of comradeship and commitment
That was why On our part, we toured from Obudu to Bakassi, consulting and sensitizing our people on the need for us to welcome the coalition partners, to join hands and take our country and state back”.
Nyong recalled that the National Chairman, spoke extensively about what the ADC stands for. He explained further that the Party would bring hope and a future assured for the teeming population of young people from diverse groups and backgrounds.
While assuring Nigerians that Senator David Mark under his leadership as the party chairman will use clean, clear templates, follow agreements and galvanize support and followership, based on capacity and the mission to rescue Nigeria

Crisis Hit ADC as Ex-Deputy Chairman Takes Over Party Leadership

By Mike Odiakose, Abuja
Fresh leadership crisis is rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a former National Deputy Chairman of the party, Nafi’u Bala, has declared himself the new Interim National Chairman of ADC.Bala, who is also a former governorship candidate of the ADC in Gombe State, made the declaration at a press conference held late on Wednesday night in Abuja.
Bala accused the David Mark-led interim leadership of the ADC of hijacking the party through unconstitutional means and warned of impending legal action to challenge what he described as a “total surrender” of the party’s structure to external political actors. “We wish to draw the attention of all members of our great party and Nigerians at large, to the ongoing acts of political hooliganism being perpetrated by some individuals who were hitherto entrusted with the leadership of the party,” Bala said. His declaration comes weeks after a coalition of prominent opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, adopted the ADC as a platform to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.The coalition arrangement was formally announced on July 2 by Ralph Nwosu, founder and pioneer chairman of the ADC, who also revealed the resignation of the National Working Committee (NWC) and endorsed an interim leadership led by Mark. But Bala insists the move lacks legal and moral legitimacy.“We are all living witnesses to the show of shame and acts of lawlessness being displayed by these unscrupulous leaders, who, without any qualm or sense of moral restraint, plunged our party into a needless crisis and leadership uncertainty,” Bala declared. He condemned what he called an unprecedented and undemocratic transfer of party leadership to “political strangers,” vowing to defend the party’s constitutional order.“The idea of mortgaging the future of our great party, by abdicating the constitutional duties and responsibilities of all elected officers of the party, to some powerful outsiders who never belong to the party, is condemnable,” he added.Bala described the internal shake-up as a “shoddily rehearsed political melodrama,” saying it would be resisted through both party mechanisms and legal channels.“In case these individuals choose to ignore our urgent calls to obey our constitutional guidelines and thus remain very obdurate and recalcitrant in their aberrant behaviour, we shall proceed with gusto to challenge these gross acts of impunity in the courts and bring them to justice,” he said.Bala emphasized that the party’s constitution clearly outlines the processes for leadership succession and that, in line with those provisions, he was now assuming the position of interim national chairman. He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to “urgently” recognise him as the legitimate leader of the party.POLITICS
Appointment of Yilwatda, Hounding of Opposition by EFCC Can’t Save Tinubu in 2027 – APC Chieftain

By Mike Odiakose, Abuja
A controversial chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers state, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has declared that the appointment Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda as APC National Chairman and harassment of opposition politicians cannot save President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
He alleged that President Bola Tinubu is having his eyes on electoral fraud in 2027 and the recent appointment of Prof. Yilwatda as National Chairman of the APC has further highlighted this.Chief Eze also noted that the sudden activation of EFCC’s attack mode against perceived political foes is highly condemnable and signposts an administration that is paranoid over the conduct of a credible, free and fair election come 2027 general elections. In a statement released to the media, Eze stated unequivocally that none of what he described as the devious plots being adopted by the Tinubu administration to retain power will come to fruition.“I wish to state that none of these acts, both unleashing the EFCC on opposition politicians and appointment of Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda as the National Chairman of APC, so that he can manipulate INEC, will save Tinubu from relocating back to Lagos come 2027,” Eze said.“The truth is that 2027 general elections are neither between APC and ADC nor any other political party, but emphatically between APC and Nigerians.“With the level of hydra-headed socio-economic and political calamities that have befallen this country due to Tinubu’s inhumane, clueless and anti-people policies, I know Nigerians will do everything humanly possible to free themselves from the circle of deaths occasioned by maladministration.”According to Eze, plans by the Tinubu government to intimidate the immediate Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), out of the coalition movement is an exercise in futility. For Tinubu to go after Malami, one of late President Muhammadu Buhari’s trusted ministers, a few weeks after the burial of the former president, according to Eze, is a sign of ingratitude and obsession to hold on to power by all means without minding whose ox is gored.“Report at my disposal is that Malami will be questioned over at least five suspicious transactions during his time in office as the AGF and Justice Minister,” Eze said.“Five of the transactions under investigation are: The mysterious payment of $496 million to Global Steel Holdings Ltd (GSHL) as settlement for the termination of the Ajaokuta Steel concession nine years after the Indian company had waived all claims for compensation.“His handling of the sale of assets worth billions of naira forfeited to the EFCC by politically exposed persons.“His role in the $419 million judgment debt awarded to consultants who claimed to have facilitated the Paris Club refunds to the states.“The strange agreement to pay Sunrise Power $200 million compensation in its dispute with the FG over the Mambilla power project; and the duplicated legal fees in the transfer of $321 million Abacha loot from Switzerland to Nigeria.”The APC chieftain stated that in as much as he is not against prosecuting public officials who are suspected to have corruptly enriched themselves while in office, making such action selective and targeting politically exposed Nigerians in opposition, to say the least, is unacceptable and stands condemned.“So, Tinubu wants Nigerians to believe and clap for him, that one of the former opposition governors serving presently in his administration as a minister is a saint, and has no skeleton in his cupboard?“I make bold to state categorically that going after Buhari’s minister (Malami) is a deliberate but calculated plot to send warning signals to leading coalition movement politicians that nobody, no matter how highly placed, will be spared by Tinubu in a bid to retain power in 2027,” Eze said.Eze contended that the strategy by sitting presidents to use security agencies like EFCC, DSS, Police, ICPC, etc. to hound opposition politicians prior to elections has become old-fashioned and no longer dreaded because of its selective aura.
