7 Die, 43 Injured in 14 Crashes During Sallah in Kogi- FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kogi Command, said on Tuesday that seven persons died while 43 others were injured in 14 accidents during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
Mr Stephen Dawulung, the Sector Commander in Kogi, told newsmen on Tuesday in Lokoja that 45 persons escaped unhurt.
Dawulung said the July 6 to July 13 ‘Stand down of the Corps Special Patrol Operations,’ also recorded a total of 409 traffic offenders.
He said that traffice offenders were booked for 441 offence.
“Speed violation was mainly responsible for about 90 per cent of the crashes recorded during the festive period.
“Notwithstanding, the special patrol operation was very successful as motorists experienced free flow of traffic.
”This was especially at some traffic flash points, where high rates of traffic jams and crashes had always been recorded in the past,” Dawulung said.
He listed some of those flash points to include; the Koton Karfe axis, Jamata area, upper Natoco, Nataco junction, Felele, Zarriagi and Obajana by-pass.
Dawulung attributed the feat recorded during the festivity to strategic planning, sensitisation of the motorists to change their orientation through a mega-rally held on July 7 at the Felele Park, Lokoja.
“It was also due to early deployment of officers and logistics to man traffic flash points, timely clearance of obstructions in the forms of broken down vehicles and indiscriminately parked vehicles, as well as trading on the road.
“Enforcement targeting speed, drink driving, distracted driving, route violation, riding motorcycle without helmet and prompt rescue operations at crash scenes.
“The free and seamless flow of traffic can also be attributed to the opening of some diversions created for the purpose of road construction.
”This was between upper Nataco and Felele which was based on my recommendations, as well as collaboration between our officers and those of the Police and Navy,” Dawulung said.
Newsmen report that the FRSC deployed over 700 men, 20 patrol vehicles, tow trucks and ambulances within the state.
This, he said, was to ensure a free and safe traveling experience for motorists during the sallah festivities.
The sector commander had urged drivers and motorists to always align with speed regulations, through adherence to speed limits and installation of speed limiting devices. (NAN)

Ohanaeze Decries Benue Killings, Urges urgent Government Action

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has decried the wanton killings in Benue, urging the Federal and Benue State Governments to end the needless bloodletting forthwith.
The group made the call in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr Ezechi Chukwu, and made available to newsmen in Enugu on Monday.
According to Chukwu, Ohanaeze unreservedly condemns the horrifying massacre of over 100 people and burning of houses by gunmen, who reportedly invaded Yelwata Community in the early hours of Saturday.
“The deadly night attack, which has caused massive displacement, in addition to the loss of innocent lives and property, is seen by Ohanaeze as callous, inhuman and unacceptable.
“Human life remains sacrosanct, irrespective of religion, ethnicity or social status.
“This idea of ruthless mass bloodletting at any slightest provocation is ungodly and antithetical to national conviviality in a multi-ethnic country as ours,” Chukwu stated.
He added that Ohanaeze decried the prolonged inability of government and security agencies to stem the escalation of attacks in Benue and other parts of the country.
The statement explained that there would be dire consequences of the incessant attacks to the progress and wellbeing of the Nigerian state, if not contained.
“We, therefore, call on government and stakeholders at different levels to put in place adequate measures that would address this theatre of carnage, by finding a lasting solution to the vicious circle of violence between herders and farmers.
“Benue Government and stakeholders may, as a matter of urgency, collaborate with the Federal Government and security agencies to convoke a national dialogue on the unending destruction of lives and property in the state,” he added. (NAN)
