Rivers Govt. Seals Collapsed Building Site, Says Structure not Approved
The Rivers Government has sealed off the site of a collapsed building in Rumuodara, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, saying that the structure has no approval.
Mr Isaac Umejuru, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, told newsmen in Port Harcourt on Saturday that the state government would hold the engineer that handled the project responsible.
“The building was constructed without approval from the state government, it collapsed because a new structure was placed on the old one.
“It’s an old building, the engineer placed a second structure on top of it, and that led to the collapse” he said.
Umejuru expressed thanks to God that all the three persons inside the structure during the collapsed were safe.
“A 2-year old child was also there. We are happy that they did not die as a result of the incident. They are currently receiving medical attention. We are hopeful that they will be fine,” he said.
The commissioner said that the state government would thoroughly investigate the cause of the collapse with a view to prosecuting anyone found culpable.
He cautioned property developers on constructing buildings without approvals from relevant authorities.
“We shall not hesitate to bring illegal property developers to book. It is only right to get approvals before construction begins,” he said.(NAN)

APC Forum Decries Deplorable Condition of Federal Roads
The Forum of Stakeholders of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has decried the deplorable condition of some federal roads in Nigeria. Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, the North-Central Chairman of the forum, said this in an interaction with newsmen on Wednesday in Jos. Zazzaga described some of the federal roads as ”death traps”, particularly those within the north-central region.
He said that some of the deplorable roads in the region include Jos-Akwanga, Makurdi-Oturkpo-Otukpa, Makurdi-Ankpa, and Jos-Saminaka. Other roads that needed urgent attention, he said, included Suleja-Minna, Ejule-Otukpa, Ganawuri-Manchok, Lokoja-Abuja, Lapai-Agaie-Bida, Birnin-Gwari-Bokani-Mokwa, Minna-Zungeru-Tegina-Kontagora. ”Currently, the north-central region has the most deplorable roads and highways in the country. ”These deplorable roads have brought severe hardship on the people and lost lives and property through preventable road traffic crashes. ”We call on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and ensure the rehabilitation of these roads because good roads are vital enablers of development,” he said. The chairman also called on governors of states within the region to reconstruct the dilapidated roads and seek refunds from the federal government. ”Though these are largely federal roads, they are located within states, and the beneficiaries are the people of these states. ”So we call on state governments to reconstruct these roads and seek refunds from the federal government,” he added.
