CNG Saves 70% in Vehicle Maintenance – Experts

Some Automobile Experts have said that cars using Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) save 70 per cent in maintenance and running expenses compared to those running on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS)They made the assertion during separate interviews in Abuja.Speaking on the benefits of converting car from using petrol to CNG, the experts noted that beyond fuel efficiency, CNG is environmental friendly, improved engine performance and extends its longevityMr Bayero Farah, the Director-General, Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), told NAN that using CNG cars will save 70 per cent running expenses compared to cars that runs on petrol.
He said there would be extension of service duration, engine performance and emission close to international standard while using CNG cars over those that use petrol.According to him, CNG will have a stable price for long period of time because it is not dependent on exchange rate and production challenges like the PMS and diesel. The NITT boss, however, said that the disadvantage was just the initial cost of conversion which is very high at the moment.“Other considerations are, the availability of gas and technical expertise for repair and maintenance which the current administration and NITT are working to bring fast solutions to.“NITT, by its mandate is working to provide adequate technical manpower through the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI) that will deliver the entire value chain of the CNG.“The PCNGI is establishing conversion facilities across the country to provide conversion, repairs and maintenance services.“It is creating awareness on the benefits and consequences of using CNG and integrating relevant stakeholders in the CNG value chain,” he said.Mr Oseni Suleiman, National President, Amalgamated Union of Motor Mechanics and Technicians (AUOMMATON) told NAN that CNG cars guaranteed cheaper maintenance cost than petrol-powered cars.He said CNG burns more cleanly than petrol, reducing wear and tear on engine components and its combustion produces significantly lower emissions compared to PMS and diesel.“CNG is cheaper and cleaner to use. It is cost effective as it burns slowly in emission and consumption than the petrol.“But the availability of its refill stations in Nigeria as at today, is not encouraging.“The spread of petrol and diesel stations across Nigeria is more, even when the products may be scarce most at times.“Also, petrol seems to have been adulterated severally, such that it has lost its early quality which is now responsible for its quicker emission and losing of power and value, “ he said.Suleiman added that CNG is safer than other fuels in the event of a spill.“CNG storage systems undergo rigorous safety testing and are designed to withstand various conditions.“Its gaseous nature disperses quickly, minimising the risk of fire and explosion,” he said.He underscored the need for more Nigerian artisans to be trained in the conversion of petrol using vehicles to CNG running ones.Suleiman said AUOMMATON had initiated the process to achieving the training and asked government for support. Also speaking with NAN, Mr Julius David, a car dealer in Abuja said some of his patrons had been demanding for CNG vehicles. The Chief Executive Officer, Prince Autos noted the buyers were getting to realise the greater benefits in the use of CNG cars.“The unpredictability of the petrol market often leads to scarcity of petrol. During these times, petrol is usually sold at a very high price and this directly increases the cost of transport, and of every other thing indirectly.“This makes it more difficult for Nigerians to cope. So, CNG is an alternative.“CNG produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants than petrol and diesel.“CNG is generally cheaper than petrol and diesel. Natural gas is abundant and widely available. CNG vehicles require less maintenance than petrol and diesel vehicles, “ he said. Some CNG vehicle owners who spoke with NAN also affirmed that the design was cost effective and easy to maintain.“My own is factory fitted. When I bought the car some years back, I did not know the advantages, I was running on petrol because the gas stations are not available“it was challenging entering some public places because of the cylinder in the trunk. There was a time I wanted to dismantle it, but my mechanic advised me against it.“But now, I am enjoying it. If I fill the cylinder for N4000, it takes me more than one week to exhaust it, and I go to work from Kubwa to Garki daily,” Mr Joseph Oluebube said. The distance from Kubwa to Garki in FCT is about 34 kilometres. Some other car users, however, expressed concerns about the cost of converting their petrol cars to CNG which they said it is between N700,000 to N1 millionThey stressed the need for the government to open more conversion centres and CNG filling stations across the country. The motorists also called on government to offer incentives for using CNG vehicles to encourage more Nigerians to enjoy the new development in the country. Israel Claims Control of Tehran’s Skies as Deaths Mount on Both Sides

The Israeli military said on Monday it had gained control of airspace over Tehran and destroyed a third of Iran’s surface-to-surface missile launch pads. The casualties mounted on the fourth day of the conflict between the two regional powers.Military spokesperson Effie Defrin said that more than 50 Israeli fighter jets and precision missiles were involved in the strikes overnight.
This was targeted and destroyed over 120 Iranian launch pads. Missile depots and production facilities were also hit, he said.According to Defrin, Iran launched 65 missiles and dozens of drones at Israel overnight apparently only about half of what Iran’s military had intended to fire.“We thwarted a significant portion of the planned attack.“We can now say that we have achieved full air superiority in the skies over Tehran,’’ he said.He added that Israeli forces were continuing to target units actively attempting to launch missiles or engage Israeli aircraft.Since Friday, Israel has carried out widespread strikes on Iranian territory, including nuclear sites, defence installations, urban targets, and oil and gas infrastructure.According to the military, the attacks have also killed several high-ranking officers and nuclear scientists.Defrin reiterated that the operation’s central aim is to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons and long-range missiles. He said strikes would now expand further east into Iran.“We still have difficult days ahead, but we will get through them together and emerge victorious,” he said.Iranian strikes kill eightIsrael’s Defence Minister Israel Katz on Monday promised harsh retaliation against Tehran following a fresh wave of deadly Iranian rocket attacks on Israeli cities overnight.Iran had carried out targeted shots at the civilian home front in Israel, he said, adding that “residents of Tehran will pay the price and soon.’’According to emergency services, eight people were killed and 92 injured in the overnight attacks. The total number of fatalities in Israel since Friday now stands at 23.Emergency officials reported four strikes in the Tel Aviv area.U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said the embassy’s branch office in Tel Aviv sustained “minor damage from concussions’’ caused by a nearby impact, but no injuries were reported.Iran casualties mountAt least 224 people have been killed in Iran since the Israeli attacks began last week, the Health Ministry said. Some 1,277 had been injured, a ministry official wrote on X on Sunday. More than 90 per cent of the casualties were civilians, the spokesman said.Iranian media reported that an Israeli strike hit a hospital in the western city of Kermanshah, with a video from the Shargh newspaper showing a damaged intensive care unit and a blood-stained bed.An Israeli army spokesman said the reports are under investigation.Under international humanitarian law, hospitals are protected civilian sites and may only be targeted if clearly used for military purposes.
