From Ene Asuquo, Calabar

The Cross River state government has inaugurated a pilot conversion and training center to facilitate the conversion of vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in the region.

This initiative was designed to support the government’s CNG program and alleviate the financial impact of fuel subsidy removal by lowering transportation expenses.

At the commissioning of the CNG vehicle and training facility in Calabar, the State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, represented by his deputy, Rt.

Hon Peter Odey, stated that the center is the largest of its kind in Nigeria, establishing a new benchmark for CNG vehicle conversion and technician training.

The CNG Initiative is part of the relief measures from President Bola Tinubu’s government to assist the public facing the challenges following the removal of the fuel subsidy by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

In his keynote address, Michael Oluwagbemi, Programme Director and Chief Executive of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi), represented by Head of Commercial Tosin Coker, highlighted that adopting CNG is a pivotal step toward diversifying the transportation sector away from oil dependency.

Oluwagbemi emphasized that the CNG center represents a pathway to a more environmentally sustainable and economically thriving future for Nigeria.

Chairman of the Board of Directors at Blue Stone Gas and Power Limited, Oludamola Akindolire, encouraged Nigerians to view the conversion of vehicles to CNG as a fresh start, affirming Blue Stone’s commitment to promoting clean energy based on sustainability and integrity.

He noted, “We can convert up to 40 vehicles daily here—an unprecedented achievement in the country. As part of our immediate strategy to provide relief to Nigerians, we aim to establish a daughter station within the next six months and utilize a mobile system to transport CNG to power vehicles in the meantime.

“This facility will not only convert vehicles but also has the capability to fill gas tanks using mobile systems. We have plans to introduce three mobile CNG dispensers to enhance operations, which will evolve into mother and daughter stations across the state. We also aim to expand the gas infrastructure throughout the state.”

Dr. Justin Beshel, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, mentioned that the PCNGi brought 500 conversion kits to the state at no charge and highlighted that the center is equipped with advanced facilities, including 13 pits for efficient vehicle conversion and hydraulic car lifts for safe maintenance.

He also noted that the training center can host around 100 technician trainees simultaneously, providing practical experience and individualized instruction, alongside a dedicated section for tricycle conversion and maintenance.

“The training programs receive certification from prestigious organizations like the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the Nigerian Institute of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE), as well as international bodies, ensuring that the technicians we train adhere to global standards,” he explained.

Bayer Leverkusen and Super Eagles striker, Victor Boniface was involved in a car crash on Sunday, a day after the club’s 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Boniface, who scored a 72nd-minute winner in Saturday’s match, on Sunday shared pictures and video of a smashed car in since-deleted posts on Instagram, as well as what appeared to be a picture of his hand covered in blood.

A club source said Boniface was doing well after incident.

German tabloid Bild reported that the Nigeria international was a passenger in the car en route to Frankfurt airport and suffered minor hand injuries before being taken to hospital.

In a post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, Boniface wrote: “God is the greatest”.

The Hessen state police website said the accident occurred on Sunday morning.

“A 28-year-old was driving a Mercedes in the middle of three lanes in the direction of Frankfurt when, according to his own account, he lost control of the vehicle due to fatigue.

“He  collided sideways with a truck that was driving in the right lane next to the Mercedes,” the report added.

Boniface’s management agency did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

The 23-year-old Boniface has scored seven goals in 10 appearances for Leverkusen across all competitions this season.

German champions Leverkusen, who are fourth in the Bundesliga standings with 14 points from seven games, face French side Brest in the Champions League on Wednesday. (Reuters/NAN)

The Imo Police Command says it has dismantled a camp allegedly
operated by the Indigenous People of Biafra and its militant wing, called the Eastern Security Network, at Nempi, Oru West Local Government Area.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, ASP Henry Okoye, disclosed this in a statement issued in Owerri and made available to newsmen on Sunday.

Okoye said the bold move was part of the command’s ongoing efforts to curb terrorism and ensure public safety in the state.

He said the operation, carried out on Saturday by the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, also led to the detention of 29 suspects, including 25 males and four females.

He said that the operation was initiated, following the detention of a key suspect, Emmanuel Anukuru, 25, on September 15, at Mgbidi, near Owerri.

“His vital confessions enabled police operatives to locate and dismantle the camp.

“During the operation, several dangerous items were recovered, including four pump action guns, two locally made revolver, five locally made pistols, and three AK-47 magazines,” Okoye noted.

He added that a POS machine, 20 rounds of live cartridges, one white SUV and local bulletproof charms, used by the criminal syndicate were also recovered.

Okoye further stated that the sum of N200,000, allegedly extorted from kidnap victims, was recovered.

“These findings underscore the persistent threat posed by these groups in the state.

“Investigation is ongoing, efforts are in progress to apprehend the manufacturers of the locally made guns,” he emphasised.

The PPRO urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, and assured residents of the command’s commitment to public safety.

The command’s offensive was coming on the heels of a two-day sit-at-home order in the South-East via a viral video sent out by an unidentified person.

In the video, which has caused panic among the people, a man was seen warning residents of the region to remain indoors on Monday, October 21, and Tuesday, October 22 for their own safety.

He claimed that the defunct Republic of Biafra was going to launch its flag and Armoured Personnel Carriers in the five states of the region on the two days.

He feared that security agencies would attempt to counter the move and consequently resulting in a mayhem in the zone.  (NAN)
