In order to reduce the risk of fire outbreaks during the harmattan season, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Director General Zubaida Umar has launched a nationwide fire awareness and sensitization campaign.

This was contained in a statement issued by NEMA, at the weekend and made available to journalists in Abuja.

The statement reads, “This initiative aims to reduce the risk of fire outbreaks during the harmattan season by engaging key stakeholders and empowering communities with preventive measures and response strategies.

“The campaign, implemented through NEMA’s Zonal Territorial and Operations Offices, is being conducted in collaboration with the Federal and State Fire Services.

A key component of the initiative is the training of Emergency Management Volunteers (EMVs) at the grassroots level. These volunteers will be equipped with practical knowledge and skills to prevent and manage fire emergencies, addressing the increasing prevalence of fire incidents during the dry harmattan period.

“Recognizing the rising cases of tanker fires, NEMA is also focusing special attention on tanker drivers and related stakeholders. Through targeted sensitization programs, these drivers will receive essential training on fire safety, including preventive practices and emergency response techniques. Additionally, the campaign extends to market associations, local businesses, and other stakeholders, fostering widespread adoption of fire prevention measures.

“Speaking about the campaign, the Director General NEMA Zubaida Umar highlighted the urgency of proactive measures during the harmattan season, which often poses heightened fire risks. She emphasized that the campaign aims to promote a culture of disaster prevention to protect lives, property, and livelihoods.

“She said the nationwide sensitization effort is a reflection of the commitment by NEMA to empower communities and work collaboratively with critical stakeholders such as tanker drivers, market leaders, and grassroots volunteers”.

The DG NEMA also underscored the importance of collective responsibility in adhering to disaster warnings, preparations, and response mechanisms to mitigate the loss of lives and property.

This initiative by NEMA reaffirms its dedication to building resilient communities through prevention, training, and collaborative action.

The Chairman of the occasion and Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Enugu State, Dr Martin Chukwunweike, urged every household in the state to pick a copy of the book as a guide to pathway to healthy living.

“Establishment of an international hospital in Enugu designated for quaternary healthcare services. This will greatly reduce the number of Nigerians that seek healthcare outside the country; thus, conserving the much-needed foreign exchange,” he said.

Ndibuagu, who is serving with ESUT Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu, noted that within his 37 years in medical practice he had observed that people die due to lack of information on healthy living.

From Ekundayo Idowu, Abeokuta

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has called on the people of the state to celebrate Christmas with moderation and extend hands of fellowship to the less privileged and vulnerable in society.

Abiodun made the call in his Christmas message at the Ogun State Christmas Carol and Service of Nine Lessons, held at the Arcade Ground, the State Secretariat, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

He said Christmas is a time that transcends barriers and unites people across different divides, emphasizing that it is a period that focuses on the timeless values of love, compassion, kindness, and faith.

He said: “It is a season that inspires us to look beyond ourselves and embrace the bond of family and friendship.

Let us extend our hands to the needy, for such acts reflect Christ’s life to the world.”

Abiodun called on the people to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas, which entails giving and sharing, adding that without Christ, there is no Christmas.

“It is a time to give back to our community and support the needy,” he added.

He said his administration remains steadfast in its commitment to uplifting the vulnerable by fostering inclusiveness, which is necessary to build a society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

The governor, however, noted that his administration’s greatest success is not the legacy imprinted on the hearts of the people, but the strength of the community, the resilience of the people, and the compassion shown to one another.

While praying for the spirit of Christmas to continue to strengthen the people’s bond, inspire progress, and bring peace and prosperity to every family, the state helmsman urged people to carry forth the lessons of Christmas, which are kindness, unity, and hope for a brighter future as they look forward to the New Year.

In his sermon titled “Building Our Future Together,” the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Most Reverend Nicolas Okoh, said Christmas represents an opportunity to reconcile man to God through Jesus Christ, who is the Prince of Peace.

Taking his text from John 2:7, the CAN president said it was imperative for believers to be champions of reconciliation and not merchants of bitterness, as the birth of Jesus drew man closer to God.

He described Ogun State as a home of peace where people from other parts of the country live in unity and lauded Governor Abiodun for running an inclusive government, which he noted has united all segments of the people in the state.

The Presiding Bishop of Living Faith Church (Winners Chapel), Bishop David Oyedepo, while praying for the state and nation, said though peace is a scarce commodity that cannot be bought, the birth of Jesus has brought peace to the world.

The clergyman reminded Nigerians that the essence of Christmas is not only to make merriment but to show love to one another through peaceful coexistence, emphasizing that when there is peace, all problems come to an end.

Highlights of the carol service included Bible readings by the wife of the governor, the Deputy Governor, the Speaker, the Chief Judge of the State, the Secretary to the State Government, among others, and renditions by various choirs and guest artists.

From Mike Tayese, Yenagoa

A coalition of Non-Governmental Organisations in Bayelsa state has called on President Bola Tinubu to uphold the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission’s (NUPRC) rejection of Shell’s request to sell its remaining shares in the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) to the Renaissance consortium.

The NGO’s state categorically that any approval of Shell’s and Total’s requests would weaken regulatory independence and ignore the interests of the Niger Delta communities.

Saying it will jeopardise the environmental and social well-being of the region for generations to come, and undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Addressing Journalists at the NUPRC office in Yenagoa the state capital during a protest rally, the Resource Justice Manager for Social Development Integrated Center-Social Action Dr. Prince Edegbuo said, they want to make it absolutely clear that approving Shell or TotalEnergies divestment in its current form without addressing the profound environmental and social costs would be a grave injustice to the people of Niger Delta.

He said the action could lead to significant unrest in the region, adding that it would be an affront to the generations of Niger Deltans who have fought and died for environmental justice, their homes and their livelihoods.

“Approving Shell’s SPDC would send a dangerous message to all Multinational corporations operating in Nigeria that they can extract our resources, leave devastation behind and walk away without consequences. This is not just a question of corporate accountability; it is about Nigeria’s sovereignty, dignity, and the right of its people to live in a clean and safe environment”.

“We hereby demand immediate halt of all divestment processes until a transparent, comprehensive and inclusive review is undertaken that addresses Shell’s and TotalEnergies historical environmental and social liabilities. Ensure inclusive and transparent consultation with the state government and the people of the sites of oil and gas extraction in the Niger Delta before any further divestment of IOC assets.

In his contribution, Morris Alagoa who represents Environmental Defenders Network (EDEN) said any buyer that is buying should ensure that it’s on black and white that is buying both assets and liabilities. Saying the oil bearing communities have been crying of pending liabilities such as unclean and unpremeditated sites and pending legal cases as regards compensation.

While speaking, the state chairman of Bayelsa Non-Governmental Organisations Forum (BANGOF) Taritien Boco said, while waiting for the state government to take action on the reports submitted by BSOEC, they have come out to sensitize the public and get a message to the presidency, to NUPRC and the national assembly that the divestment processes should stop immediately.

According to him, they are doing this across the Niger Delta to pass their message to the national assembly and after this they will know the next steps to take.

In his response, the Manager Corporate Services and Administration, Dr. Prince Oshodi said, any grievances the CSO have, they are going to look at it and will address them. Saying they have a protocol to ensure that as Nigerian we maximize the opportunities and benefits of the oil and gas industry.

He promised that they will take their complaints to the executive officer in Abuja, Engr. Gbenga Komolafe and they will look into their grievances. Saying they are here to protect the interests of Nigerians.
