President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, said the telecoms sector’s regulatory framework and operations would be reviewed to reflect global best practices, with a greater focus on protecting infrastructure.

Tinubu spoke at a meeting with an Airtel delegation led by Mr Sunil Mittal, Chairman, at the State House.

“I am pro-business, and I will continue to be that.

I can give you that assurance.

“The entire ecosystem will be further examined, and if there is anything we can copy from India, we are ready to do so. We are prepared to learn.

“It is for the good of all of us, and Nigeria is so critically important that we must give attention to those revolutionary intentions that can make business work,” he said.

The President noted that the tax reforms would create a more favourable climate for investors.

He said his administration would find a way to work with tax administrators to encourage growth and opportunities.

Mr Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, thanked the President for consistently supporting the telecoms sector’s growth.

Tijani said the approval by the President for the protection of fibre optic and undersea cables would further stimulate growth in the industry, assuring that the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) had started implementing and enforcing the law.

Mittal commended the President for the two-pronged economic reforms that had transformed the economy for future growth.

“When you took office, you made some promises. Given the country’s situation, I was unsure how deep and far you could take your commitments.

“I am, indeed, reminded of 1991, when India was in a similar situation, and we were practically on our knees, having pledged 500,000 tons of gold to the Bank of England, and our vessel in Tokyo had been put up for sale.

“During that time, the Prime Minister and his team took similar reforms to what you are taking now in Nigeria, and India has never seen better times after that,” he said.

He said the duties went down, the rupee was floated, and it depreciated significantly. “Relicensing happened, and it was the dawn of a new world in India. We just moved forward,” he said.

Mittal said the reforms turned India into one of the largest economies in the world.

“I feel that what you have done here is unprecedented in a challenging time. Only people of resolve and steel can endure this huge pressure, floating the naira, which moved from N450 to about N1900 and is now coming back to N1400 to N1500.

“It has been a remarkable achievement celebrated by the entire world. This was much required, and you delivered on your promises,” the Airtel Chairman told President Tinubu.

He also commended the removal of the petrol subsidy.

“The second one was the removal of subsidy, which was a very tough decision for any politician. It was unpopular and difficult, but you held your position, knowing fully that not doing it would not help the country.

“You have taken a long-term position. It is my belief and hope that you have created a legacy for yourself. Your first term as President will mark a watershed in the development of your country.

“This will be a turning point, and I would like to commend you for having held a firm position and taken the country forward,” he added.

Mittal said more Nigerians should be encouraged to invest in the country, particularly those with huge financial portfolios abroad.

“I have been speaking to people in Nigeria, friends and business people, and they are all now feeling calm, and when they start to get back, they will move very fast. I have experienced this in India,” he stated. (NAN)

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) says that no fewer than 120 million persons have so far been captured in the ongoing nationwide National Identity Number (NIN) enrollment since inception. The Director General of NIMC, Mrs Abisoye Coker-Odusote disclosed this at a media conference on Wednesday in Abuja.

She said the enrollment would still continue at both the rural and urban communities.
“We have enrolled many Nigerians and still counting so we are definitely going to continue to ensure that we enroll more Nigerians before the end of this year.
” One of the things that we have done under the partnership with the World Bank on the Nigeria Identification for Development (ID4D) project is that we have been able to ensure that the private sector is integrated into what we do.
“We have collaboration with the private sector through our scheme known as Frontier Partners where they join us to enroll Nigerians nationwide and they go out there with us and enroll Nigerians,” she said.Coker-Odusote said the Commission had been able to create an enabling environment by providing jobs nationwide .She said NIMC state offices and even at the local governments were equipped with upgraded equipments to help enrollees in various communities to be able to enroll.“There are well trained NIMC staff that are willing to assist you to be able to enroll through the application and modify the information as requested.“So it’s very important for us to know that when we are looking at the pricing framework, the summary of it is some prices were deleted, some prices were reviewed downward, and some prices were increased,” Coke-Odusote said. She said that citizens were allowed to book online, and visit the centres to pre-enrol, pre-fill their information as well as get their biometrics captured.Coker-Odusote said the pre-enrolment system processes had reduced across port for easier access of time in biometric capturing, saying that information were submitted online and authenticated and pre-enrolled.“People may move from one location to another location and they want to update because of jobs, because of family, people relocate to different parts of Nigeria.“So, if you move from Lagos State to Kaduna or you move from Abuja to Cross River, you need to be able to update your records. “So rather than allowing people to come and queue up at our centres we created the modification platform online,” she said . Coker-Odusote said the platform known as Self-Assist Platform allowed users you to log in with their biometrics, authenticate and follow cyber security policies and data protection policy to be able to modify data and update record online.“The NIMC NIN Authentication application is the official service for integration with the Commission’s backend infrastructure.“It introduces a robust layer of protection, empowering individuals with greater control over their personal information,” she said.Coker-Odusote said student loans could only be facilitated through NIN enrollment, saying it would drive economic growth and financial inclusion.” The government has provided access to facility, loan facilities for students or aspiring students that would like to further their higher education to be able to apply for this process with ease.“All you need to do is go on to their portal, input your name and what that does is you have a single source of information and verifiable information,” she said. The Director General said the process was to eliminate the possibility of duplication and also reducing cases or instances of identity fraud, adding that students had been able to apply for the loans successfully. She also said that the Commission had also engaged cyber security experts to be able to help strengthen to international best practices.“We have been able to reduce issues around extortion and corruption by at least 40 per cent. “It’s an ongoing process, we’re working on it and we have done quite a bit to be able to address all the problems,” she said. Coker-Odusote however, said training and re-training were ongoing in order to deliver their services efficiently.(NAN)

Fighting erupted overnight between forces loyal to Prime Minister Abdul-Hamed Dbeibah, including the 444 Brigade, and militias aligned with Abdel Raouf Kara, head of the Special Deterrence Force.

Children Under 18 Years Have Nothing To Do With Make-Up – Expert

A Child Coach, Mrs Olugbemisola Osagiede-Daramola, has said that children under 18 years of age have nothing to do with make-up.

Osagiede-Daramola, the Founder of Olugbemisola Daramola Child Welfare Foundation, said this in an interview in Ilorin on Wednesday.

She said that children under the age of 18 are too young to wear make-ups to look attractive.

According to her, make-up is used by adults to cover up some blemishes in the face and enhance beauty in a moderate manner.

“When underage children start applying make-up, it robs them of their innocent look and throws them out into the world.

“They are still young and lack the emotional maturity to withstand pressure from sexual abusers.

“It is absurd for a girl-child to be in a school uniform with make-ups, or her hair packed with gel,” she said.

Osagiede-Daramola, therefore, called on parents to be cautious and prevent their girl children from adopting a lifestyle that could ruin their future.

She also urged school managements to be sensitive to their students’ dress codes and punish any student who arrogantly violates the laid down codes of conduct.

The coach advised the students to embrace modesty and discipline rather than being fashion conscious. (NAN)
