The Police in Ondo State say two commercial motorcyclists, Komolafe Sunday and Lekan Temitope, have been arrested for acting as spys for kidnappers in the state.

Mr Wilfred Afolabi, Commissioner of Police in the state, made this known while speaking with newsmen on Tuesday in Akure.

Afolabi said that five other suspected kidnappers were also arrested at different locations within two weeks across the state.

According to the CP, Sunday, m, aged 39, also knows as Veego, was arrested on Feb. 22, 2025 by the Police (Special Squad) through the use of technical support.

“During interrogation, he confessed to be a motorcyclist who helps the kidnappers to get food for their victims while in custody, and also receives money based on the number of people kidnapped.

“He (Sunday) also serves as spy to inform them of movements along the road.

“Sunday led the Police to Akunu-Akoko, where two suspected kidnappers, Umaru Abubakar Sanda and Yusuf Ahmadu, were arrested.

“Sanda confessed to be the one who guards the victims in the forest when they are brought to base.

“Further interrogations led to the arrest of Lekan Temitope a.k.a legelege, who is also a motorcyclist that works for the kidnappers,” he said.

The CP said that two other suspected kidnappers, Ridwan Salisu, aged 45 and Umar Isyaku, aged 19, were also arrested at Ipele in Owo Local Government Area of the state.

Afolabi explained that the duo were arrested on March 14, 2025 through coordinated intelligence-led policing, while Salisu claimed that over N3.6 million found in their possession was for his Point of Sale (POS) business.

The CP, therefore, said investigations were ongoing to confirm if the money was the proceeds of ransoms paid by victims.

“Also, on February 24, 2025, joint efforts of the Police and local vigilantes at Owo led to the arrest of one Abdullahi Mallam Bala, aged 21.

“Bala could not give satisfactory account of what he was doing in the bush alone without being a nomad or having any reason to be in there.

“Further investigations revealed that he is one of the suspects on the run, part of the syndicate of Ibrahim Dan Umaru, who was arrested earlier in the year.

“Bala’s name has reoccurred in kidnapping-related cases,” Afolabi said.(NAN)

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has reaffirmed the commission’s neutrality ahead of the 2027 general election, saying INEC has no candidate or political party to favour.

In a post obtained from INEC’s X handle on Sunday, Amupitan stated this during a visit to the Emir of Zazzau, Amb.

Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, as part of the commission’s stakeholder engagement and preparations for the 2027 elections.

The visit formed part of activities surrounding INEC’s planned interactive meeting with staff and readiness assessment at the zonal level.

The INEC chairman was accompanied by National Commissioners, the Acting Director-General of the Electoral Institute, his Chief Press Secretary, Chief Technical Assistant, Chief of Staff, Special Aides and other senior officials of the commission.

Amupitan described traditional institutions as important stakeholders in the electoral process because of their influence and reach within communities.

He said elections were fundamentally about the social contract between citizens and those entrusted with public office, stressing that public trust was essential to the success of democracy.

According to him, INEC has commenced preparations early because of the size and complexity of conducting elections across Nigeria.

He said the commission had moved away from last-minute preparations and was testing, auditing and strengthening its operational systems well ahead of the 2027 polls.

Amupitan assured the Emir that INEC remained committed to neutrality, fairness and transparency in the conduct of elections.

“We have no candidates, we have no political party, we have no interest other than the sovereign will of the people of Nigeria,” the INEC chairman said.

He added that the commission would continue engaging traditional institutions and other stakeholders as it intensifies preparations for the 2027 General Election.
