By Eze Okechukwu, Abuja

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio has urged Nigerians to be patient with the administration of President Bola Tinubu, assuring that the reforms initiated by the government will soon bear fruits of economic prosperity.

Akpabio, who made the call in his opening address as the Chairman of the Second Plenary Meeting of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria at Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State yesterday asked Nigerians not to be despaired by the current situation that Nigeria was going through but to look forward to a brighter future.

“Let me seize this opportunity to urge my compatriots to be patient with your government as we lay again the foundations of this house.

Do not despair when the winds blow strong or the scaffolding shakes.

“For a nation is like a mighty cathedral—it is not raised overnight, but stone by stone, prayer by prayer, hand by hand. “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles.” (Isaiah 40:31).

“Let us therefore renew hope in the Nigerian enterprise. Let us believe again that our land can be great, that our children can inherit a future brighter than our present. Let us bind the wounds of division, banish the cynicism of despair, and walk together—Church and State, pulpit and parliament, faith and policy—towards the dawn.

“Transformation is not the burden of one arm of society, nor the privilege of a select few. It is a covenant of partnership. As St. Paul declares: ‘We are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building”, he said.

In his remarks, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume who represented President Tinubu at the occasion said the administration was working towards building a country that works for everyone.

“This administration came into office with a firm commitment to renew hope, strengthen our democratic institutions and build a Nigeria that works for all. We have taken bold steps to stabilize the economy, attract investment and implement reforms that will bring enduring benefits to our country”, he stated.

He urged the Church to keep supporting the government and assured that the Tinubu administration would leave no one behind through its social investment programmes.

Also speaking, the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno stated that the Catholic Church has played key roles all over the world in fighting injustice, enthroning democratic governance and placing the welfare of the people at the centre of her policies.

He said his administration has invested heavily in lifting people out of poverty, especially the poor and vulnerable persons and to improve their living conditions. He enumerated several intervention programmes initiated by the government. He called for the continued support of the Church in delivering dividends of democracy to the people.

The conference had in attendance the Apostolic Nuncio and representative of the Pope, Most Rev. Michael Francis Crotty, Catholic Bishops from all over Nigeria and other Catholic faithful, members of the National Assembly, politicians and the worshippers from all parts of the country.

2027 Elections: INEC Voter Register Hits 103m

By Tambaya Julius, Abuja

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said Nigeria’s voter register has risen to more than 103 million ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja while speaking at a strategic workshop for media executives.

The workshop, themed “Strengthening Democracy Through Partnership Among Editors, Civil Society and Electoral Institutions,” was organised by INEC in collaboration with Development Alternatives Incorporated (DAI) and the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE).

Amupitan said more than 10.6 million Nigerians took part in the commission’s three-phase Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

He said INEC had completed the public display of the preliminary register, giving citizens an opportunity to raise claims and objections.

The commission, he added, had also concluded the final cleanup of the voter register using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).

Amupitan announced that nationwide collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) would begin on October 9.

He urged Nigerians who registered during the exercise to collect their PVCs and prepare to participate in the 2027 elections.

The INEC chairman also said the commission would continue to improve the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) to strengthen the credibility and transparency of the electoral process.

“The ultimate arbiter of electoral integrity is public trust,” Amupitan said.

He called for stronger cooperation among INEC, media organisations, civil society groups and other stakeholders ahead of the elections.

According to him, INEC is prepared to listen to concerns raised by editors, address operational challenges and provide timely information to prevent misinformation from filling communication gaps.

Amupitan said the commission would also give editors direct access to verify field incidents, logistical developments and security reports in real time.

He proposed a sustained editorial feedback mechanism between INEC and the NGE to review the commission’s operational progress and address emerging challenges throughout the 2027 election cycle.

The chairman said closer engagement with the media was important to ensuring that voters receive accurate information, especially during periods of heightened public interest in electoral activities.

Also, DAI Team Leader, Rudolf Elbling, said credible elections depended not only on effective electoral administration but also on professional, ethical and fact-based journalism.

Elbling identified electoral integrity, election technology, the safety of journalists and voters, and information disorder as some of the key challenges facing the media ahead of the 2027 elections.

He said journalists had a critical role in providing voters with accurate information while holding electoral institutions and other stakeholders accountable.

The workshop brought together electoral officials, editors, civil society representatives and other stakeholders to strengthen collaboration and improve public communication ahead of the 2027 general elections.
