From Attah Ede, Makurdi

Traders at the popular Makurdi Modern Market in Benue State, on Tuesday shut down the market over what they called” incessant cases of car stealing” in the market. The traders have alleged that car stealing has become the order of the day with no arrest made, calling on the government to launch extensive investigations into multiple reports of stolen vehicles in the Market.

When our correspondent visited the market, the main entrance gate was locked while marketers including the police and the other security taskforce were seen outside the market discussing the situation. Many people who came to buy one or two things were seen stranded as they could not access the market to purchase goods.
The traders insisted that they would not open the market for businesses for the next two days just to register their grievances over the constant and persistent stealing of vehicles and other items in the market by suspected thieves. One of the traders who identified himself as Mazi Ezenna, told journalists that no day passed by that the market union would not receive reports of car theft. He further stated that traders were no longer conformable with the situation, having drawn the attention of the conventional security agents and ministry of industry, trade and investment with no action taken.”We are tired of complaining about this issue of insecurity in the market. There is no security at all. We have spoken to the government through the State ministry of industry. Just imagine, between September to November 1, no fewer than six vehicles have been stolen from the market. Customer will drive his or her vehicle to the market, park it to go purchase goods, and the next thing, the car is no longer there.”We, traders, have lost so many cars this year in the market. So, we have decided to stay off the market for two days to enable us to think of what to do next and for the Government to provide security in and around the market. We can’t be losing our goods all the time and customers continue to have their cars stolen”, Ezenna said.Reacting to the development, the commissioner for industry, trade and investment, Orpin Alumo, said the ministry was not aware of the situation, saying that the traders union only communicated to his office about their intention to embark on fasting and prayers with no specific date and time.Alumo admitted that there are security lapses in the Market, stating that the ministry has already taken steps to address the situation. He explained that although he has received complaints that stealing has increased in the market, the government is working in synergy with the traders union and other relevant stakeholders to curb the situation.According to him, it is unfortunate that the traders could embark on this silent protest without properly notifying the ministry.”We have had meetings with officials of the union and other relevant stakeholders in my office and we did agree on cooperation even though the government has not been able to live up to expectations by not regularly paying stipends to those taskforce engaged to work in the market. However, the traders must understand that security is everybody’s business and so they too, need to join hands.”I still emphasize here that I suspect a case of sabotage because no date and time for their praying and fasting was stated in the letter. And when I got the letter I still called on the chairman of the union to come with his officials for a meeting with management of the ministry so that we can understand what exactly the problem is.”However, we have liaise with the special adviser to the governor on security and he has agreed to deploy men of the community volunteers guards to the market”, Alumo said.He appealed to the traders to show more understanding and cooperate with the State government as the ministry has proposed plans and waiting for the governor’s total rehabilitation and overhauling of the market.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has apprehended one Umar Muhammadu for allegedly mixed loading a Mitsubishi Canter with no fewer than 15 persons and 8 motorcycles concealed under its trampoline.

This was contained in a statement on Saturday in Abuja, by the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Osondu Ohaeri.

According to Ohaeri, FRSC personnel intercepted the vehicle, registration number GDD 815 ZP, after professional suspicion prompted a closer inspection of its sealed trampoline.

He said that marshals discovered 15 persons and eight motorcycles dangerously concealed among goods, beneath the covering in clear violation of road safety regulations and with grave implications for the safety of the occupants and other road users.

“The driver, who allegedly attempted to sway an FRSC Marshal with N500 and could not produce a valid driver’s licence, was arrested.

“The vehicle and its occupants were handed over to the Divisional Police Officer, Mararaba, for further investigation and prosecution, following the directive of the Sector Commander, RS7.1 FCT, CC Tijjani Iliyasu,”he said.

The CPEO also said that similarly, in Abia, a Mobile Court sitting and presided over by Magistrate C. E. Nwankpa, sentenced Azubuike Dominic to one month imprisonment at the Afara Correctional Centre after he was apprehended for driving without a valid driver’s license.

He said that Dominic was driving a Toyota Hiace commercial vehicle, registration number GWB 298 XY, without a valid driver’s licence and absconded while being escorted to court.

“The driver was re-apprehended several kilometres away following a coordinated pursuit involving FRSC personnel and the military.

“The development underscores the corps’ determination that enforcement actions will not be frustrated by attempts to evade lawful arrest or judicial proceedings,” the CPEO said.

According to him, the corps views the incidents as compelling evidence that its enforcement architecture is moving beyond routine interception to intelligence led, evidence based and technology conscious road safety enforcement.

He said that in the enforcement, professional observation and adherence to Standard Operating Procedures were deployed to uncover concealed violations and protect lives.

He also said that the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, had consistently charged personnel to remain vigilant, professional and uncompromising in the discharge of their statutory responsibilities, while strengthening inter-agency synergy.

Ohaeri warned motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, against attempting to evade enforcement, concealing passengers or motorcycles, overloading vehicles or driving without valid licences.

According to him, any of these offences will attract appropriate sanctions.

“The corps will continue to combine intelligence, professional enforcement, mobile courts and strategic inter-agency collaboration to protect road users and make Nigeria’s roads safer,” he said.

He emphasised that there would be no hiding place for reckless and dangerous driving on the road to a safer Nigeria.
