Abiola Not Killed, Died From Illness-Gen Abdulsalami

By Jude Opara, Abuja
About 29 years after the controversial June 12, 1993 presidential election, former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar has said that the acclaimed winner of the election, Chief Moshood Abiola was not killed but died after taking ill.
The Army General who was also the Head of State at the time equally explained; “Well, I smile because there were lots of allegations here and there that we killed Abiola. As always when I am talking about late Abiola, I still thank God for directing me on things to do when he gave me the leadership of this country.
He added; “On the day Moshood Abiola passed away, may he rest in peace, two to three things made him always say he thanked God for the guidance He gave him, adding that he received a delegation from America headed by Pickering who was then the Secretary of State or so and on the team was Susan Rice.”
Abubakar also revealed that after the normal courtesy and discussion they had, when they were leaving his office, Pickering said; “Your Excellency we made a request to see Moshood Abiola but we were denied”, so I said “Why were you denied? Who denied you?” There and then I made a decision, I said “Look, you will see Moshood definitely; I overruled whoever said you cannot see him”. So I now called my Chief Security Officer, I said “Please make arrangement for this team to see Abiola,” that is one point.”
According to him, during the incarceration of Abiola, to the best of his knowledge, except his personal doctor, no member of his family saw him and that when he became Head of State, based on consultation and interaction together with Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, he gave the family a date that they could visit him. The former Head of State also revealed that a day before he died, his family came to Abuja to see him, and that for one reason or the other, the whole family could not see him at the same time, so it was agreed that a group will see him that day, while the next batch will see him the following day.
Abubakar continued; “So they saw him like yesterday, now this team from US came to see me and I said they could see him. Normally it was in the evenings the families go and see him. So because I had authorized the American team to see him, so the other part of the family was waiting to see him.
“It was at this meeting when the American team was meeting Abiola that he fell sick and suddenly the security officers called the medical team to come and attend to him”, adding that when they saw the situation, they said it was severe and they needed to take him to the medical centre. He explained that it was the medical team plus the American delegation that took him to the medical centre, where he eventually died.
General Abdulsalami Abubakar further explained that it was then his security chief called and said, “I have bad news for you”, I asked what it was, he said, “Abiola is dead”. I was shocked.
He said his security chief told him that he was there with the American team, at that time he (former head of state) was staying in the barracks, he had not moved to the Villa, saying, “so I said okay, let him take the American team to my house, I will meet them at the house; so I closed from the office, and went there.”
The former Head of State added that the burden on him then was how he would break the news to Abiola’s family and how would his government inform the world that Abiola had passed on.

We’ll Fully Comply with S/Court’s Judgment – Fubara

Gov. Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers, says his administration will fully implement the recent judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria on political crisis rocking the state.
Fubara gave the assurance on Tuesday at the inauguration of the new Judges’ Quarters, a housing facility completed by his administration in Port Harcourt.
He stated that the quarters was built for Judges who are indigenes of the state or connected to the state by marriage.
“The political issues in Rivers happened for protection of the interest of its people.
“It has not been an easy 16 months but what is important is the interest of our state, which must be above our personal interest.
It is not about me, it is about the good of this state,” he said.Fubara said the money expended in prosecuting the political crisis on both sides was a huge waste.
He stated that such financial resources and other efforts, would be more profitable, if they were synergised, and channelled to things that promoted genuine well-being and good of the state.
“Thank God we are here today, I can assure you that I have not gone back on my words that nothing, no price is too big to pay for peace in this state, because at the end of the day, it is about our people.
“It is not about me, I will leave office but the good work that I have done will speak for me and will defend my generation,”he said.
Fubara said that completing the facility, showed that his administration priotised the welfare, particularly of judicial officers.
He explained that his administration inherited the project, and with reports from the Ministry of Justice and some concerns from the judiciary, it became imperative to continue with it.
“We give glory to God that today, we have completed this project, and we are willing and ready to hand it over to the lucky judges who are going to live here so that they can perform their duties effectively.”
The governor harped on the need for proper maintenance of the facility and the entire premises.
The Chief Judge of Rivers, Simeon Amadi, recalled how he laid the foundation stone of the project, which was initiated by the immediate past administration on May 22, 2023.
The chief judge commended Fubara for completing the project, which he said represented another milestone and great accomplishment for the Rivers judiciary.
“We are pleased with this landmark achievement, which represents continuation of the policy of providing befitting residential accommodation for judges of Rivers on owner-occupier basis or monetary ground in lieu thereof.
“This is backed by the Rivers State Housing Scheme for Judicial Officers Law No. 10 of 2021, passed by the Rivers House of Assembly, and signed into law by the immediate past governor.
“The Rivers government remains resolute in ensuring that judges were quartered while in service, and in recent years, had gone further to allocate official quarters to judges on basis of owner-occupier or monetary ground of a fixed sum in lieu thereof.
“The policy of providing official accommodation for judges on owner-occupier basis or monetary ground in lieu thereof has greatly reduced the pressure on judicial officers who hitherto, struggled to build retirement homes while in service with limited resources.
“Such pressure and desire to own retirement homes in time past was a major concern and had its impact on job performance,” he added.
In an address, Mrs Ibiwari Clapton-Ogolo, the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary of the state justice ministry, said the housing scheme law applied to judicial officers who must be indigenes of Rivers either by birth or marriage.
“The scheme provides for ownership of a decent accommodation in the state by every judicial officer who is an indigene or married to an indigene or monetisation of the accommodation, subject to the approval of the government.
“In accordance with the above law, today, the chief judge of Rivers will commission seven duplexes of five bedrooms, which are exquisitely furnished.
“Our judges deserve nothing less. I pray that these duplexes will not just be living houses but homes where they will find peace and rest as they discharge their duties to God and to men,” she added.(NAN)

Crisis: Again, Lagos Assembly Lawmakers Debunk Alleged Defection Plan

Lagos State House of Assembly members have again dismissed reports alleging that 25 lawmakers are planning to defect from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to an unnamed political party.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Security, and Strategy, Stephen Ogundipe, made this known in a statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday. The Assembly had previously debunked similar defection claims on Feb.
19.Ogundipe categorically described the latest allegation as entirely false and baseless, saying that no APC member of the Lagos Assembly was contemplating defection.
“It is important to recall that during the recent leadership dispute within the Assembly, a similar report emerged, suggesting that 27 members were preparing to leave the APC for the Labour Party.
“That claim was also unequivocally refuted, with members reaffirming their commitment to the party and their confidence in resolving internal disagreements through established mechanisms.
“We acknowledge that challenges may arise, but we remain committed to addressing them through democratic and lawful processes.
“The leadership of our party is fully engaged, and any outstanding issues will be resolved amicably.
“We urge the public to disregard these unfounded reports, which are designed to mislead and create unnecessary tension,” he said.
Ogundipe reaffirmed the lawmakers’ loyalty to the leader of the party and President Bola Tinubu, stating that they remained steadfast in their support and dedication to the party’s ideals.
He also advised those spreading falsehoods to desist, emphasising that the Lagos Assembly remained focused on its legislative mandate.
“Our priority remains enacting laws and passing motions that promote the progress and development of the state,” he said. (NAN)
