The sociocultural organization of the Irigwe people, the Irigwe Development Association (IDA) has described the renewed massive destruction of irrigation farmlands by suspected Fulani herdsmen at a time moves were being made for a lasting peace in the trouble communities between Irigwe locals and Fulani nationals championed by the Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) as a deliberate act to rubbish the efforts of the OPSH Peace Committee in Plateau State.

National Secretary General of IDA, Hon. Danjuma Dickson Auta in a statement signed and made available to newsmen yesterday in Jos, said the consistent struggles between locals and army of Fulani herders grazing and invading irrigation farms with their legions of cattle led to massive destruction of irrigation farms belonging to over 90 poor farmers who are trying to recover from the effects of attacks on their communities last year as unacceptable.

The Sociocultural Organization condemned in totality the killings of cattle on 1 March, 2022 in vengeance by some provoked youths of Irigwe land and distanced self from the unfortunate incident described such as an act carried out be individuals and not the entire Irigwe nation.

The tragic development is coming few days after an implementation committee of the 36 man committee for peace was inaugurated to set the ground rolling for peaceful coexistence between the Irigwe and the Fulani community in Bassa LGA of Plateau State.

According to Auta, “We the Irigwe had welcome this move because of our believe in the sincerity of the Commander OPSH, Gen. A.S Ali in ensuring that we all enjoy the most needed peace in our land.

“Unfortunately, our resolved to support and participate in the peace initiative organized by the Commander Operation Safe Haven and General Officer Command of the 3rd Armour Division, Gen. S.A. Ali, has been rubbished, owing to the fact that recently on a continuous bases, our people had consistently witnessed an army of Fulani herders grazing and invading of our land by their legions of thousands of cattle that lead to massive destruction of irrigation farms belonging to 90 farmers.”

He stressed that the ruthless operations on farmlands from 26th February to 2nd March, 2022 has caused huge damage to the locals who are struggling with shock at the moment despite countless times effort of the securities to evacuate and stop this army of Invaders from destruction and provocation.

“The perpetrators paid a deaf ear until they have achieved their evil acts. As a nation we’re saying that evil is evil no matter who’s behind it.”

He confirmed the killings of cattles in the area as a follow-up to the destruction of farmlands thus.

“We are also aware of the evil act of the killing of cows on 1st March, 2022, by some provoked youths of our land and we condemned such act in totality and we distance ourselves from such and that should be seen as acts committed by individuals and not the entire Rigwe people.

“We stand against any act that will return us back to the era of senseless attacks on our communities and we must all be seen serious in participating in process that would usher in genuine peace by respecting each other and distance ourselves from provoking one another.”

Auta called on the authorities to do everything possible to stop such ugly occurrence, “we condemned this in its entirety, and we distance ourselves from such and should be seen as acts committed by individuals and not the entire Rigwe people.

“We are behind the law enforcement agencies to carry out their investigations and establish the reason behind this act. We are glad that those behind it have been apprehended and they would be made to face the law,” he stated.

The Chief Consultant of Global Transport Policy (GTP), Dr Segun Musa, has urged the organised labour  to pay attention to other laws and policies of governments aside those relating to  salary and fuel.

Musa said this on Friday in Lagos State during a one-day training on emotional intelligence and leadership skills for leaders of  Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), Lagos State chapters.

He said that the purpose of the training for labour leaders was because they led the workforce of Nigeria.

” I see you as a formidable team that can change the arrative of Nigeria. The role you play is crucial. You must train those coming behind you on labour matters.

“Organised labour must not be seen as if it is only when there is increase in fuel price or issues with worker’s salary that the settled in.

“Government brings out policies regularly,  you must x-ray and speak to the issues by giving out constructive advice.

“Even when the policy does not affect the workforce, once it affects any sector of the economy and persons, it should be of concern to you,” he urged.

The GTP chief further said that the organised labour should also be interested in laws enacted by the  national and state assemblies.

Musa called for attitudinal change by  operators in all sectors of the economy, saying that development would be facilitated with the right attitudes by all players.

He said that the training, the fifth in a series, was part of GTP’s efforts to improve relationships between workers and organisations in the general interest of Nigeria.

The Vice Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, Lagos State Chapter, Mr Olabisi Idowu, said that the workshop was  welcome and timely.

“We need the training as labour leaders. The main subject of the training is emotional intelligence.

“How we can improve the economic situation in the country as leaders with emotional intelligence is good.

“For us to embark on any struggle now as labour leaders, I am well-informed on what to do and what to say to members and managements of organisations,” he said.

Mr Gbenga Okundayo, Chairman of TUC in Lagos State, commended GTP for the training on conflict resolution and leadership with emphasis on emotional intelligence.

” it is very important that we improve on our emotional intelligence and leadership skills. We manage our feelings first before we can manage others’.

” It is emotional intelligence that will tell you what to do, how to do it and where and when to do it.

“We are going to escalate this training for other leaders and members in Lagos,” he said.
