Chukwu Optimistic Super Eagles will Overrun Black Stars to Qualify for Qatar
A former Super Eagles coach, Christian Chukwu, says he is optimistic about the Super Eagles’ qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup after their playoff fixture with Ghana’s Black Stars.
Chukwu told newsmen in Enugu on Wednesday that he was “highly hopeful” of victory for the Super Eagles at the end of the two-leg encounter.
The fixture begins with Friday’s game at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, while it will end on Tuesday at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
“I am optimistic of the national team’s victory. I am already praying and mobilising local support for their victory,” the now retired coach, who was with the team as an assistant coach in 1994 when it made its World Cup debut, said.
He stated that while he was concerned that the full complement of the Nigerian squad was not around for the match he was however still full of hopes.
“I am of the belief that those around for the game will deliver for Nigeria.
“But in a situation where some invited players do not make it, we must know that this is a sign that there is the need to groom and get home-based Super Eagles players ready to replace anybody in the squad.”
Chukwu, who captained the team when it was the Green Eagles, said such a situation was an indication that the Super Eagles’ handlers should never neglect the home-based players.
“There should be a development plan, as they (home-based players) may be so useful in times like these,” he said.
Chukwu however challenged the team’s coaching crew to deploy superior technical and tactical pattern of play as the Black Stars would definitely try to pull some surprises against the Super Eagles.
He also said he was sure Nigerians would rise in full support of the team, as “they have been supporting the Super Eagles all along and they will do same this time”.
The former defender however urged the players to reciprocate the support by putting their best into the game so as to do the nation proud.
“Our players should fight for it and be resilient, because playing at the World Cup remains the most important dream and prayer of any outstanding footballer.
“The World Cup is the show-piece and zenith of football.
“It has great potentials of selling both the individual player and his country of origin to the rest of the world,” the former Super Eagles coach said.
The winners over two legs between Nigeria and Ghana will qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals billed for Nov. 21 and Dec. 18 in Qatar.(NAN)

Man City Still Work in Progress –Guardiola
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has disclosed that the team are still a work in progress following his expensive overhaul of the squad since last season.
The Spanish tactician made this known after the Citizens thrashed Crystal Palace 3-0 in Sunday’s Premier League game.
In a chat with the club’s website, Guardiola stated that the team are in a better position than last season.
“Many things we have to improve.
Madrid gave me a lot of things, that still we are not ready, not in mentality but in how to approach certain games. They are young some of the players. But 3-0 here is a big statement for us.“When you win in the past, you believe the past was perfect, always brilliant, always the red carpet.
When we won with 100 points, all the things we achieved, we had a lot of games like today. The resilience was part of that.“There are moments that you struggle. Madrid was not the perfect game, but it was a step. We fought unbelievably to achieve that.
“We are in a better position than last season. We are close in the competitions we are in.”

Palmer out for Chelsea’s Carabao Cup Quarter-final, Says Maresca
Chelsea attacker Cole Palmer will not feature in the Blues’ Carabao Cup quarter-final against Cardiff City, head coach Enzo Maresca has confirmed.
The match is set for Tuesday at 8 pm in the Welsh capital, with a place in the semi-finals at stake.
Palmer recently returned to action after a spell out with groin and toe injuries and scored in Chelsea’s weekend victory over Everton at Stamford Bridge.
However, Maresca, in his press conference on Monday, explained that the young forward is being carefully managed to avoid overexertion.
“I’ve already said many times in press conferences that we have many players who need to be protected. Cole is one of the players who deserves to be protected right now.
In this moment, he’s not available to play two games in three days. So, he won’t be available for tomorrow’s game, but should be fine for the weekend,” Maresca said. The Chelsea coach also praised Cardiff City and their manager, Brian Murphy, highlighting the challenge the Blues will face:
“They are top of the league, playing nice football and winning games. I know Brian and know he is doing a good job. This will be a dangerous game for us, and we need to pay attention and be careful tomorrow. We have the opportunity to achieve something important, which is to reach the semi-final of this competition.”
Chelsea will hope to progress to the last four while keeping key players fresh for the Premier League schedule.

Chelsea End Winless Run with Comfortable Brighton Victory
Chelsea ended their four-game winless streak in the Women’s Super League with a comfortable 3-0 away victory against Brighton.
A stunning individual goal from Sandy Baltimore in the 42nd minute rewarded Chelsea’s first-half dominance, before a Caitlin Hayes own-goal and an Alyssa Thompson strike put the game beyond Brighton.
Chelsea came into the match following a first WSL defeat in 34 games and three consecutive draws before that, leaving the defending champions six points behind league leaders Manchester City.
Brighton goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley – standing in for Chiamaka Nnadozie who had a concussion – frustrated Chelsea by tipping a Baltimore volley over the crossbar before blocking Thompson’s diving header, while Keira Walsh hit the post with a long-range drive.
But French winger Baltimore showed her quality when she drove forwards on the left flank, cut inside past a defender and curled a right-footed shot into the far top corner.
Sonia Bompastor brought on Sam Kerr at the break and the Australian striker had a near-instant impact – it was her lurking presence in the box that left Brighton defender Hayes with no choice but to head into her own goal from a driven Erin Cuthbert cross.
Chelsea looked their old selves from that point on as Wieke Kaptein then Kerr forced Baggaley into smart saves in quick succession.
Brighton boss Dario Vidosic brought on former Chelsea forward Fran Kirby in the second half, but the hosts could not find a way back into the contest.
Thompson wrapped up victory in the 73rd minute by converting first-time from Kerr’s low cross, her third goal in her past four WSL outings.
Chelsea leapfrog Arsenal into second place in the table but remain six points behind leaders Manchester City, who beat Aston Villa 6-1 on Sunday. Brighton remain seventh with 14 points.
Are Chelsea back? With a month until their next WSL game, it was important they showed the kind of quality and ruthlessness that saw them win six consecutive league titles and complete last season unbeaten.
Earlier this week Bompastor said she did not feel her switch to a back four had caused Chelsea’s dip in attacking output, but on Sunday she reverted to the three defender and wing-backs system Chelsea began the season with.
Wing-backs Ellie Carpenter and Baltimore were constant threats on either side, even if it did take their team-mates a while to find the right passes to feed their runs.
Wayward finishing and sloppy final balls cost Chelsea goals early on, but Baltimore’s moment of brilliance meant the visitors weren’t under pressure to score after the break.
That seemed to have a freeing effect, as Chelsea attacked with greater fluidity and efficiency thereafter.
Kerr’s introduction at the start of the second half gave Chelsea a focal point and presence that Aggie Beever-Jones didn’t offer – her failure to gamble on Lauren James’ early low cross was a case in point.
Brighton had Baggaley’s six saves to thank for keeping the score respectable, though they did spurn a couple of half-chances on the break when Chelsea left bodies up the field. That’s something for Bompastor to try and snuff out.
