Adopt Political Solution to South East Unrest, Izunaso Urges FG
….South East Unrest
By Eze Okechukwu, Abuja
Senator representing Imo West senatorial district in Imo State, Osita Izunaso, has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to seek a political solution to address the ongoing security challenges in the South East region.
He believes that the release of the leader of the Biafra separatist movement, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, could be a key step towards restoring peace in the troubled region.Izunaso, who spoke to Senate Correspondents after plennary revealed that he had raised the matter during the session and sought to mandate the Federal Government to explore a political solution, which includes considering the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
However, the Senate stood down the motion due to the ongoing legal proceedings related to the matter.
“The fact that the Senate stood down the motion doesn’t mean they are not interested in peace returning to the South East. They stood down the motion because the matter is in the court. As you know, there’s so much the Senate will do from behind and they will certainly do it,” he clarified.

Senator Izunaso emphasized the significance of peace and stability in the region, which has been disrupted by the activities of some elements associated with Ipob. He stressed that the IPOB leader himself has condemned such activities on several occasions. Nonetheless, he suggested that the Federal Government could consider a political solution to the issue, instead of solely pursuing a legal approach that could result in further lockdowns and unrest in the region.
The senator commended the South East Governors for their efforts in combating the enforcement of sit-at-home orders, which are often observed every Monday and sometimes beyond. However, he advised the Governors to work closely with the Service Chiefs and take a firm and decisive stance against those enforcing the sit-at-home orders.
Regarding the recent actions taken by the Enugu State Government against individuals and businesses that observed the sit-at-home order, Senator Izunaso refrained from condemning the government’s actions. He instead attributed the compliance to fear rather than genuine obedience. He urged the Governors to collaborate with security chiefs to ensure protection for those willing to open businesses and resist the enforcement of the sit-at-home orders.
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the founder of the Indigenous People’s of Biafra (IPOB) movement, had sought independence for the South East region due to perceived marginalization. His detention sparked civil disobedience, leading to the observance of sit-at-home orders every Monday. Despite being freed by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, the IPOB leader has remained in detention, prompting criticism from the IPOB leadership.
