 The Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, through its Women Affairs Secretariat has concluded arrangements to partner with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) on educating Adolescent girls, women, and vulnerable individuals through non-conventional and flexible education programs.

This was revealed during the courtesy visit of the Mandate Secretary, FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, Honourable Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi to The National Open University.

 The Mandate Secretary who was on the visit with her Team emphasized the need to provide an innovative, condusive and flexible Curriculum for Adolescent Girls, Women and vulnerable individuals in the FCT.

She added that it has become imperative; “Prioritizing the six area Councils, making sure they all benefit equally, acknowledging the challenges they face in accessing traditional education systems.”

She stressed the importance of empowering these groups through education and developing programs that can accommodate their unique circumstances.

The National Open University, known for its credibility, flexibility and affordability, was identified as a key partner in this initiative.

 The university’s non-conventional approach to education aligns with the vision of the Women Affairs Secretariat to provide learning opportunities that cater to the specific needs of women and vulnerable populations.

The Vice Chancellor of the National Open University Professor Olufemi A. Peters expressed strong support for the collaboration with the Women Affairs Secretariat, highlighting the university’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and accessibility in education.

He expressed enthusiasm about the potential addition of a special course focused on professional caregiving skills called “Super Nannies”. The Vice Chancellor highlighted the potential impact of this course in empowering individuals to contribute to the holistic development and well-being of children and families, ultimately benefiting communities at large.

During the meeting, both parties discussed the potential for tailored educational programs that integrate life skills, vocational training, and entrepreneurship opportunities, aiming to equip women and vulnerable individuals with the tools they need to succeed in their personal and professional lives.

According to the Vice Chancellor, The partnership between The Secretariat and the National Open University represents a significant step towards addressing educational disparities and promoting women’s empowerment.

He said it also anticipated that the collaboration will lead to the development of innovative and impactful educational initiatives that will positively impact the lives of young girls, women, and vulnerable individuals across the country.

The Mandate Secretary expressed optimism about the potential collaboration and its ability to create positive change, stating that the partnership would signify a major milestone in advancing women’s rights.

This collaboration also reflects a broader commitment to providing inclusive and quality education for all, irrespective of gender or socio-economic status.
