The Equity International Initiative and Citizens Coalition Against Corruption, two of the groups leading the ”End Bad Governance” have called on President Bola Tinubu to reverse the electricity tariff hike and restore fuel subsidy. The group made the call on Thursday in Jos, while briefing newsmen on the ongoing ten-day protests across the country.

The group’s spokesperson, Mr Chris Iyama, said that the electricity tariff hike and fuel subsidy removal should be reversed to alleviate the sufferings of poor Nigerians.
Iyama said that the present electricity tariff was not only callous, but also evil and anti people. He urged the government to take deliberate steps to ensure food security, as farmers could no longer go to their farms due to incessant attacks.
“It has been alleged that the continuous attack on our farmers and destruction of farmlands in our local communities are being sponsored because they want to push Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), into the market with support from multinational companies and big donors.“We cannot fold our hands and allow this act of terrorism to continue in Nigeria.“We therefore call on the President to declare a state of emergency on food security and submit an executive bill to ban GMOs for health and safety concerns.“On import tariffs, we call on the president to give an executive order to customs officers at the borders to reduce import tariffs on imported goods.“This will further reduce the prices of goods by more than 40 per cent.“On insecurity, we call on the president to exercise his political will and fight insecurity decisively.”The Nigerian security architecture should be reformed to fight insecurity, so that farmers can go back to their farms and citizens can enjoy relative peace,” he said.Iyama called on the president to caution security agencies to ensure the safety of all protesters across the country.According to him, the protest is necessary for the sake of the unborn generations of Nigerian children who will inherit the country after the current generation. The spokesperson said that the group stood united with the people on its mission to demand better governance and the protection of democratic rights. He added that the voices of the people must be heard, and the government must act in the best interest of its citizens.Mr Gad Shamaaki, a civil society activist, lauded the youths for speaking against the sufferings of Nigerians in a peaceful manner.Shamaaki stated that people were hungry, but farmers could not go to their farms because of insecurity. The activist called on the government to ensure that the economy worked for the benefit of all Nigerians.“The government has the responsibility to ensure that every child has a quality education and has access to a quality healthcare system.“We want to see practical solutions to the challenges bedvilling the country because we have no other country than this one,” he said. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, has said no individual or group would be able to eliminate any tribe on earth.Akume stated this on Tuesday during the flag-off of the distribution of Federal Government relief materials to survivors of the Yelewata attacks at the emergency camp in Makurdi.

The SGF who visited the scene of the attack and the hospital where the injured were receiving treatment said that attacks which wore the clothes of ethnic cleansing were unjustified and unacceptable.
He said no individual or group would be able to eliminate a whole tribe on earth because God Almighty will not allow it.Akume recounted that over 6 million Jews were in the past killed in Germany, but today they have tripled the figure, adding that the attacks, killings and displacements were inhuman.
He, however, appealed to the Benue people, especially the people of Yelewata, to continue to pursue the path of peace no matter the amount of provocation. The former Benue governor further said President Bola Tinubu was committed to preserving the unity and sovereignty of the nation. He said the President would stop at nothing to ensure that all Nigerians sleep with their eyes closed.Akume conveyed his deepest condolences to the people and urged them never to lose hope in life and the government.Speaking during the occasion, former Minister of Agriculture Chief Audu Ogbe said the country was gradually losing her humanity.Ogbe said that even during wars children and women were spared, adding that the invaders attacked and even hurt one-year-old babies in the process. The former minister described the victims as the most dedicated citizens of the nation who, year in and year out, produce food for the nation and even beyond. He said no society on earth would survive such carnage, adding that the Benue people fought for the unity of the country in the 1960s and would not allow such acts to continue. In his remarks, Sen. Jacob Gyado urged the people not to lose faith in the President Tinubu-led Federal Government.Report says that the SGF had earlier visited Yelewata, the scene of the massacre, and interacted with stakeholders in the area. The SGF thereafter made a symbolic presentation of the relief materials to the IDPs and a cash donation. (NAN)
