Abiola Not Killed, Died From Illness-Gen Abdulsalami

About 29 years after the controversial June 12, 1993 presidential election, former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar has said that the acclaimed winner of the election, Chief Moshood Abiola was not killed but died after taking ill. Abubakar who was speaking in an interview with Trust TV, said this was what actually happened contrary to insinuations that Abiola may have been poisoned after taking a cup of tea before he eventually passed on.

The Army General who was also the Head of State at the time equally explained; “Well, I smile because there were lots of allegations here and there that we killed Abiola. As always when I am talking about late Abiola, I still thank God for directing me on things to do when he gave me the leadership of this country.

He added; “On the day Moshood Abiola passed away, may he rest in peace, two to three things made him always say he thanked God for the guidance He gave him, adding that he received a delegation from America headed by Pickering who was then the Secretary of State or so and on the team was Susan Rice.”

Abubakar also revealed that after the normal courtesy and discussion they had, when they were leaving his office, Pickering said; “Your Excellency we made a request to see Moshood Abiola but we were denied”, so I said “Why were you denied? Who denied you?” There and then I made a decision, I said “Look, you will see Moshood definitely; I overruled whoever said you cannot see him”. So I now called my Chief Security Officer, I said “Please make arrangement for this team to see Abiola,” that is one point.”

According to him, during the incarceration of Abiola, to the best of his knowledge, except his personal doctor, no member of his family saw him and that when he became Head of State, based on consultation and interaction together with Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, he gave the family a date that they could visit him. The former Head of State also revealed that a day before he died, his family came to Abuja to see him, and that for one reason or the other, the whole family could not see him at the same time, so it was agreed that a group will see him that day, while the next batch will see him the following day.

Abubakar continued; “So they saw him like yesterday, now this team from US came to see me and I said they could see him. Normally it was in the evenings the families go and see him. So because I had authorized the American team to see him, so the other part of the family was waiting to see him.
“It was at this meeting when the American team was meeting Abiola that he fell sick and suddenly the security officers called the medical team to come and attend to him”, adding that when they saw the situation, they said it was severe and they needed to take him to the medical centre. He explained that it was the medical team plus the American delegation that took him to the medical centre, where he eventually died.

General Abdulsalami Abubakar further explained that it was then his security chief called and said, “I have bad news for you”, I asked what it was, he said, “Abiola is dead”. I was shocked.
He said his security chief told him that he was there with the American team, at that time he (former head of state) was staying in the barracks, he had not moved to the Villa, saying, “so I said okay, let him take the American team to my house, I will meet them at the house; so I closed from the office, and went there.”

The former Head of State added that the burden on him then was how he would break the news to Abiola’s family and how would his government inform the world that Abiola had passed on.

2027: I have No Presidential Ambition – Yahaya Bello

Former governor of Kogi, Alhaji Yahaya Bello on Friday said he won’t contest against President Bola Tinubu in 2027 because he has no presidential ambition.

In a statement signed by Michael Ohiare, his Media Director, Bello expressed surprise and shock over a video post of his 2022 rally,  claiming he had started campaigning against President Tinubu for 2027.

The statement read: “While we state categorically, that our principal, Bello, has no 2027 presidential ambition, we want to also stress his unflinching commitment to the re-election of President Tinubu come 2027.

“The indices cannot lie. The President and his team have done exceedingly well for the country, despite global challenges.

On merit, he deserves the support of well meaning Nigerians.

“Nigerians should disregard the mischievous post insinuating a fresh presidential support rally as what it is – a senseless post by a confused, witless mind

“The fabricators forgot that the 2022 dates are boldly written on the banners on display. Yet, they expect reasonable people not to see this as the handiwork of detractors. ” he said.

Ohiare described the post as a “senseless post” by mischief makers, who have no other job than to fabricate falsehood and disseminate same to mislead unsuspecting Nigerians.

According to him, the fabricators have tried so hard in their “bring-him-down-at-all-costs” mission against Bello but have always failed woefully.

The director stated that it was not the first time detractors and their co-travellers would fly absolute falsehood with the aim of setting the former governor against President Tinubu.

“But this latest slant of reposting a 2022 rally afresh and insinuating that it is just happening, connotes nothing but sheer mischief.

“Nigerians should be wary of witless persons who concoct stories without thinking, just to satisfy the interests of their paymasters, ” he said

He stressed that the post was out of desperate bid to create crisis where there is none. (NAN)

Senate Passes Bill Establishing FMC Adikpo into Law

By Eze Okechukwu, Abuja

The Senate yesterday passed into law a bill for the establishment of a Federal Medical Center, Adikpo in Benue state.

The bill which was sponsored by Senator Emmanuel Udende (APC, Benue North East) was read for the third and final time during plenary with an unanimous approval by the legislatures when it was committed to the Committee of the whole.

The bill, according to Udende, seeks to establish a federal medical center in Adikpo which will not only cater for the health needs of the people of Benue North East senatorial zone but Benue state and Nigeria in general and beyond.

“The bill awaiting presidential assent seeks to bring medical care closer to the people, especially in times of emergency.

The distance between Adikpo , a Nigerian boarder town and Makurdi, Benue State capital where a Federal Medical Center exists is over 300 kilometers, so patients who need medical care within the Adikpo axis are on a danger line, hence my resolve to use the instrumentality of the parliament to address the troubling health challenge”, senator Udende said.

He explained that the people of Kwande who share boundaries with the Republic of Cameroon most often are required to seek medical attention outside their country and in most cases are frustrated or cannot afford the cost.

According to senator Udende, the strategic location of the health facility will provide potential economic benefits of trade and cultural exchange, giving its proximity to the Republic of Cameroon.

He stressed that the Federal Medical Centre will also trigger infrastructure development, healthcare and open up the locality in terms of education while expressing concerns that the absence of such institutions on the side of the Nigerian border town has grossly caused underdevelopment.

The senator however commended the senate Committee on Health and Tertiary Institutions for conducting a public hearing which gave rise to the final parliamentary journey of the bill.
