AFCON 2023: NFSC to Mobilise 700 Fans for Super Eagles in Cote d’Ivoire
….AFCON 2023: NFSC to Mobilise 700 Fans for Super Eagles in Cote d’Ivoire
Samuuel Ikpea, the National Chairman of Nigeria Football Supporters Club (NFSC), says the NFSC will mobilise no fewer than 700 fans to support the Super Eagles in Cote d’Ivoire.
Reports says that the Super Eagles are set to represent Nigeria at the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.
The month-long tournament is expected to kick off on Jan. 13 and end on Feb.
11.Ikpea told NAN that the NFSC was leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the Super Eagles get all the much needed support from the fans during the tournament.
“We have a chapter in Cote d’Ivoire. Of course, you are aware that the NFSC has offices and chapters across the world, and Cote d’Ivoire is apparently one of them.
“We have a fan base of over 300 in Abidjan right now, while Alh. Mudashiru will be leading over 50 fans from our Ghana chapter.
“Alh. Ibrahim Bashiru is leading 20 fans from our Niger chapter, while Mr Osita is coming with 15 fans from our South African chapter.
“Also, Togo will be joining us at Aflo with 30 fans, alongside the 300 fans we will be leaving with from Nigeria,” he said.
The NFSC boss said that all hands were on deck to ensure victory for the Eagles in all their matches.
“I want to assure Nigerians that when the Super Eagles take on the host nation, we will not be playing 11 against 12. Rather, it’s going to be 12 against 12.
“This is because the NFSC, as usual, has often made up the 12th player, which will be storming Cote d’Ivoire with about 300 fans from Nigeria.
This number will add up to the fan base which we already have in Cote d’Ivoire.
“So that at the end of the day, the Super Eagles won’t be suffering what we suffered at the World Cup in Russia when we played against Argentina.
“We are doing everything humanly possible to see if we can surpass that figure of 300 fans,” he said.
He called on corporate bodies, private organisations as well as philanthropists to help sponsor the NFSC in its bid to ensure full support for the Super Eagles.
“That’s why we are calling on corporate bodies, private organisations and philanthropists to give us that financial backing that can help us go to Cote d’Ivoire in large numbers.
“We believe that this time around, we are not only going to beat Cote d’Ivoire at home, but we are looking at bringing that trophy home.
“Against all odds, even though Nigerians do not really have that confidence, considering whether we have a good coach or the right players,” he said.
He lamented about the difficult situation the NFSC usually have to go through just to ensure they support the team.
“It has been painful and a sad one for the NFSC, but we have always played our role as the 12th player on the pitch each time the Super Eagles play.
“Whether the Super Eagles are doing well or not, you find the NFSC members dancing and sweating it out. That’s part of what we know how to do best.
“Motivating these players whether they do well or not. Sometimes they travel over five hours trying to get to a match venue, while the Super Eagles comfortably fly to the match venue with ease.
“These same people sometimes are not given the recognition they duly deserve,” he said.
He said that the most painful part of it all is that the average return ticket for one person to Cote d`ivoire is about N 800,000.
Ikpea said the Super Eagles always do better when the NFSC gives them the much needed backing from the stands.
“This is exactly what we are going to do on Jan. 18 when we take on the hosts in the biggest game of that group, and subsequently, we’ll begin to demolish other teams and move on.
“Nigerians should be hopeful and the financial backing should be given to the NFSC, to help us travel in large numbers to Cote d’Ivoire to raise the morale of these players,” he said.
NAN reports that a total of 24 teams qualified to play in the final tournament, including Ivory Coast, who qualified automatically as hosts.(NAN)

Chelsea End Winless Run with Comfortable Brighton Victory
Chelsea ended their four-game winless streak in the Women’s Super League with a comfortable 3-0 away victory against Brighton.
A stunning individual goal from Sandy Baltimore in the 42nd minute rewarded Chelsea’s first-half dominance, before a Caitlin Hayes own-goal and an Alyssa Thompson strike put the game beyond Brighton.
Chelsea came into the match following a first WSL defeat in 34 games and three consecutive draws before that, leaving the defending champions six points behind league leaders Manchester City.
Brighton goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley – standing in for Chiamaka Nnadozie who had a concussion – frustrated Chelsea by tipping a Baltimore volley over the crossbar before blocking Thompson’s diving header, while Keira Walsh hit the post with a long-range drive.
But French winger Baltimore showed her quality when she drove forwards on the left flank, cut inside past a defender and curled a right-footed shot into the far top corner.
Sonia Bompastor brought on Sam Kerr at the break and the Australian striker had a near-instant impact – it was her lurking presence in the box that left Brighton defender Hayes with no choice but to head into her own goal from a driven Erin Cuthbert cross.
Chelsea looked their old selves from that point on as Wieke Kaptein then Kerr forced Baggaley into smart saves in quick succession.
Brighton boss Dario Vidosic brought on former Chelsea forward Fran Kirby in the second half, but the hosts could not find a way back into the contest.
Thompson wrapped up victory in the 73rd minute by converting first-time from Kerr’s low cross, her third goal in her past four WSL outings.
Chelsea leapfrog Arsenal into second place in the table but remain six points behind leaders Manchester City, who beat Aston Villa 6-1 on Sunday. Brighton remain seventh with 14 points.
Are Chelsea back? With a month until their next WSL game, it was important they showed the kind of quality and ruthlessness that saw them win six consecutive league titles and complete last season unbeaten.
Earlier this week Bompastor said she did not feel her switch to a back four had caused Chelsea’s dip in attacking output, but on Sunday she reverted to the three defender and wing-backs system Chelsea began the season with.
Wing-backs Ellie Carpenter and Baltimore were constant threats on either side, even if it did take their team-mates a while to find the right passes to feed their runs.
Wayward finishing and sloppy final balls cost Chelsea goals early on, but Baltimore’s moment of brilliance meant the visitors weren’t under pressure to score after the break.
That seemed to have a freeing effect, as Chelsea attacked with greater fluidity and efficiency thereafter.
Kerr’s introduction at the start of the second half gave Chelsea a focal point and presence that Aggie Beever-Jones didn’t offer – her failure to gamble on Lauren James’ early low cross was a case in point.
Brighton had Baggaley’s six saves to thank for keeping the score respectable, though they did spurn a couple of half-chances on the break when Chelsea left bodies up the field. That’s something for Bompastor to try and snuff out.

Liverpool ‘United as One’ after Salah Return – Van Dijk
Captain Virgil van Dijk said Liverpool “are absolutely united and go forward as one” after Mohamed Salah returned to the squad for Saturday’s win over Brighton.
Salah came off the bench for his first Liverpool appearance since claiming after last weekend’s 3-3 draw with Leeds that he had been “thrown under the bus” by the club.
The 33-year-old was left out of the squad for the midweek Champions League win at Inter Milan, but returned for the Brighton game following talks with manager Arne Slot – and claimed an assist in the 2-0 win.
Salah joins up with the Egypt national team for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) on Monday and could miss up to eight Liverpool games if his country go all the way to the final on 18 January.
“We showed this week that we are absolutely united. We go forward as one,” said Van Dijk, who made his 250th Premier League appearance for Liverpool on Saturday.
“Mo is going to Afcon and we all hope that he’ll be successful there and he’ll come back and be important for us for the rest of the season.
“The other side of it is that we all know football and we have no idea what is going to happen. I hope that he stays because he is one of my leaders and still very important for the football club. But there’s more parties to this situation.”
Van Dijk also praised Slot for how he handled the events of recent days, with Liverpool now unbeaten in five games since losing to PSV at Anfield in the Champions League.
“I think he has handled the situation very well – calm in his own way and it’s a very tricky situation,” said the Netherlands defender.
“There’s a lot of noise and pressure from the outside world and rightly so because we’ve not been up to the standard we’ve shown in the last few seasons.
“We’ve just got to keep going. He’s at a club which is very together and that’s how it has been before our time at the club, and that’s something we have to keep going.
“We go through the good times together, as a team, as a club and as a fanbase, but sometimes when the difficult moments arise we also have to stick together. This moment of time is a very good moment to see how everyone responds.”

Mikaelian Beats Jack to Regain WBC Title
Noel Mikaelian beat Badou Jack by a unanimous points decision in Los Angeles to regain the WBC cruiserweight title.
Mikaelian had been narrowly beaten by Jack in May and lost the belt, but the German earned a convincing win on Saturday as the three judges scored the fight 115-111, 116-110, 116-110 in his favour.
The bout was a scrappy affair in which Mikaelian, 35, was deducted a point in the seventh round for a punch to the back of his 42-year-old Swedish opponent’s head.
A point was then taken off Jack in the eighth for punching after the bell, with officials and both corners having to step into the ring to separate the pair as they continued to fight.
Mikaelian improved his record to 28 wins and three defeats from his 31 fights, while Jack has 29 wins, four defeats and three draws from 36 outings.
