As Nigerians continue to proffer solutions to the problems currently facing the country, the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere  has urged President Mohammadu Buhari  to make sure his administration restructures the country before the 2023 general elections.

Afenifere Leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo made the call at the group’s meeting held at his Ogbo residence in Odogbolu local government area of Ogun State.
.He advised the President to bury the idea of holding election before returning to federalism by restructuring the country, saying”there must be a country before elections.
“There must be a country before elections are held, it would be patriotic of him to heed this advice.
If Gen. Buhari is sincere about keeping the country together, he must restructure the country now this is the only answer to halt the disintegration of the country. To save Nigeria, restructure the country now”Adebanjo emphasized
The Afenifere chieftain posited that the group, was founded on the political philosophy of federalism due to the multi ethnic, multi lingual, multi cultural and multi religious nature of our country, stressing that Nigerians should be proud of inheritors of  Afenife, which he described as a noble heritage.
“Failure to adhere to this principle has been the cause of the instability that has plagued our country since Independence. Our consistent advocacy for the restructuring of the country to federalism is based on the founding philosophy of the party”Adebanjo added.

He noted that the group is the only political system that could keep the country together in peace, observing” It is mischievous for President Buhari’s government to accuse advocates of restructuring as secessionist and separatists”.
“It is the system that our founding fathers, The Saudarna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmad Bello, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe agreed to before the British government granted us independence in 1960, after the collapse of Macpherson constitution in 1953”
Chief Adebanjo continued “The clamour for the return of the country to federalism is born out of the obnoxious provision in the constitution which has made economic and political progress impossible and this has been the main cause of instability in the country”.
He said that the group’s  resolve for the restructure of the country back to federalism is unshakeable, adding” We assert we are no secessionist. It is those who oppose restructuring that are enemies of a United Nigeria. That all opponents of restructuring give impetus to secessionists”.
“We do not believe in the National Assembly which is a product of this fraudulent constitution to amend the constitution, it is immoral and illogical for a product of fraud to amend the fraud.Six years ago, I warned the nation of the danger of voting for Gen. Muhammad Buhari, I accused him of being a feudalist by birth, a dictator by training and a religious fanatic”.
“They even told us that as a military man, he would wipe out Boko Haram in 6 months. But after six years in office, we now know better. Buhari has failed in his promises to the electorate”he said
“Our economy is in tarters, corruption is growing in arithmetical proportion. Our security has collapsed to the extent that Buhari’s government has become so helpless that it now negotiates with Bandits who are so powerful that they dictate the terms of the negotiation. Kidnapping, murder, rape and various acts of criminality pervade the length and breadth of the country unabated”.
“The clamour for Gen. Buhari to resign or be impeached is growing louder and louder every day”.
“As a cover up for his misdeeds Gen. Buhari has resorted to silence the opposition by raising the false alarm that former military officers and prominent leaders of ethnic organization and some Emirs are planning a meeting to pass a vote of no confidence in him. You will wonder even if that allegation is true when is it illegal or unconstitutional in a democracy for citizens to associate. Freedom of association is embedded in our constitution”.
“He is also raises a false alarm that people are planning a coup. I assert Gen. Buhari has failed woefully, he has no clue to the problems facing Nigeria. He should go now before he plunged the country into a crisis the end of which nobody can foretell”.

He explained that Afenifere’s irreducible minimum condition of staying in Nigeria was, a restructured Nigeria, adding” Anything short of that is ‘‘to thy tent, oh Isreal.” The unity of horse and the rider in l section of the country is the rider and we the horse is most unacceptable.

“It is our consistent and persistent agitation for the right of minorities that has given birth to Edo, Delta, Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states in the South and Benue, Plateau, Borno, Kwara and Adamawa States in the North”.
“Afenifere is the beacon of progressive politics. The political philosophy of federalism propagated by our leader the sage Chief Obafemi Awolowo is now the sing song all over the country today.

“It is cheering that the call for the restructuring is no longer limited to Afenifere, PANDEF and Middle-Belt forum, The Northern Elders Forum, Arewa Consultative Forum have joined the crusade”.
He declared the group support to the decisions of the Southern governors in their efforts towards tackling the problem of insecurity facing the country, saying “Afenifere welcomes and endorse fully the resolution of the Southern Governors Forum. And we hope Gen. Buhari in the interest of Nigeria unity, peace, tranquility and economic progress give serious attention to the recommendation

National Vehicle Registry to Curb Revenue Leakages – FG

The Federal Government says the National Vehicle Registry (VREG) Policy will plug revenue leakages associated with vehicle importation and improve operational efficiency in motor vehicle administration across the country.

Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, said this during a keynote address at a sensitisation seminar on Friday.

The seminar, which focused on VREG, was attended by decision-makers, vehicle users, law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders from Lagos, as well as heads of agencies from Ondo and Ekiti states.

Edun explained that the policy would also offer stakeholders benefits such as improved access to credit, easier vehicle trade, better vehicle lifecycle management and enhanced insurance coverage.

The Federal Ministry of Finance launched the VREG policy in 2021 to enhance revenue generation within the motor vehicle administration ecosystem.

The National Vehicle Registry (VREG) is a centralised database of all vehicles in Nigeria, using the unique Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) to store detailed information on vehicles.

The VREG is connected to multiple global VIN databases and the network interconnectivity with Nigeria helps facilitation of global trade and crime fighting, amongst others.

Edun, represented by Hajia Jumai Katagum, Director of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), called for stakeholder collaboration to optimise and achieve the objectives of VREG.

He stressed the need for integration among key stakeholders, while explaining ongoing efforts to close existing gaps in vehicle administration.

The minister noted that VREG addresses the challenges caused by Nigeria’s status as the largest importer of vehicles in Africa, with over 15 million operational vehicles.

Edun explained that issues like customs duty evasion, inadequate data for vehicular policy, revenue leakages, vehicle theft and ineffective vehicle insurance coverage were tackled through VREG.

Also, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu if Lagos, represented by Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Commissioner for Transport, commended the government for bringing stakeholders together to enhance understanding of VREG.

He noted that VREG would provide all levels of government with an accurate database for real-time vehicle assessment and crime prevention.

Sanwo-Olu added, “We are confident that with continued support, VREG will revolutionise vehicle management across the country, driving economic growth and development.”

The Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, represented by Deputy Controller of Customs, Rahmon Akintola, also highlighted the potential for enhanced customs operations through collaboration with other stakeholders.

Alhaji Yusuf Othman, National President of the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), noted that the association, which controls 90 per cent of vehicles used for cargo transportation, is a key stakeholder in national revenue collection.

Othman, represented by a member of the association, Mr Stephen Okafor, appealed for the implementation of VREG at no cost to transporters.

Mr Emenike Nwokeoji, President of the Association of Nigeria Customs Licensed Agents, pledged the association’s support for VREG’s success, saying,”no imported vehicle in the country is beyond traceability”.

During a presentation titled “Optimising Nigeria’s Vehicular Ecosystem for National Economic Development”, Mr Dennis Obeto, Managing Director of Fourcore Technology Solutions Ltd., stressed the need to make Nigeria’s motor vehicle ecosystem safer and more efficient.

Obeto, a private sector collaborator on the VREG project, explained more on the the platform’s functionality and its role in transforming the vehicular ecosystem. (NAN)
