Ajaero’s Detention, Illegal – NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said that detention of its leader, Joe Ajaero is illegal, an affront to rights of workers and democratic principles of freedom of movement and expression.
Mr Adeyanju Adewale, Deputy President of NLC, said this in a communique at the end of an emergency meeting of the National Administrative Council (NAC) of the Congress on Monday in Abuja. Adewale said that the detention of Ajaero was an attack not just on the NLC leadership but on the rights of all workers and citizens to organise, protest and express themselves freely. He alleged that the detention was also an attempt by the State to scuttle the implementation of the new National Minimum Wage.It would be recalled that the NLC president was reportedly arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport while on his way to the United Kingdom on the invitation of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Britain.Adewale said that after extensive deliberations, NAC unequivocally condemned Ajaero’s detention without any legal warrant or justification.“NLC notes with grave concern that Comrade Ajaero was lawfully discharging his duties to represent Nigerian workers and had not committed any offense warranting such action..“The NLC demands the immediate and unconditional release of Comrade Joe Ajaero before 12 midnight today.“The Council reiterates that Joe Ajaero is not a fugitive or a criminal, and his detention is an act of intimidation aimed at silencing dissent and stifling the labor movement’s voice in Nigeria.“The Congress therefore places all its affiliates, State Councils, Civil society allies, and the Nigerian populace on red alert.“NAC-in-session, therefore, summons an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) by 9:00 a.m, tomorrow, Sept. 10 to take compelling action to engage the current forces of retrogression,” he said.He added that the NLC will not stand by while these rights are trampled upon.“NAC in session demands the immediate implementation of the New National Minimum Wage which has been signed into Law.“We also demand the immediate reversal of the current hike in the price of petrol to N617/Litre.“The NAC also urged the Nigerian government to reverse this dangerous trend of authoritarianism and lawlessness, which threatens the country’s democratic fabric.“NLC will not waver in its duty to protect the rights of workers and the freedom of all Nigerians,”he said.(NAN)NEWS

Man Who Cuts off Wife’s Hand in Enugu to Face Criminal Trial

From Sylvia Udegbunam, Enugu
The Enugu State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr.
Kingsley Udeh has revealed that the criminal trial of Sunday Echeji, who cut off the hand of his wife, Chinonso Echeji will start next week.He added that the trial of the suspected killer of the popular musician, Okezie Mba, popularly known as Igbo Jah, would equally start next week.
Udeh, who disclosed this on Thursday in Enugu while interacting with journalists in his office, said the Ministry of Justice has qualified and competent lawyers to prosecute both cases efficiently.
He noted that the ministry under him is prosecuting many criminal cases, revealing that they treat over one hundred criminal case files every month, which he admitted is on a high side.
The commissioner, however, pointed out that the Peter Mbah-led administration has initiated different strategies to ensure quick dispensation of justice, which include digitalisation of court filing process, virtual trial of cases, and introduction of Witness Support Fund.
“Now His Excellency the governor has approved what we called the Witness Support Fund, money earmarked for calling witnesses, especially in the criminal case.
“It was one of the things that stalled quick dispensation of justice before the current administration.
“You know that criminal prosecution is done by the state. You know that the government is not the victim or complainant in the case, and we call witnesses.
“Before now, no money was assigned to the prosecutor for calling witnesses. You may be asking if the witnesses are paid to come to the court. We don’t pay them, but we provide them with logistics.
“So if you are calling a Pathologist to come and give an expert evidence as an expert witness, they wouldn’t come until you give them money not to pay them but their logistics,” the Attorney-General said.
He informed the journalists that the state government is using every legal instrument at its disposal to decongest the correctional centres in the state, including granting of State Pardon to deserving inmates.
Udeh announced that the Supreme Court has granted Enugu State full ownership of the Hotel Presidential, which, according to him, ended all litigations previously hindering the government from doing the needful.
“Criminals were using Hotel Presidential as a hideout because it was a massive structure, no security there, so criminals were having a field day there.
“The court ordered us to go there and the place in order and pursue criminals out because it has become a security threat. So we did that and started putting things in order.
“And then we started pursuing with speed knowing that there is a limit we can go because of litigation against the state. So, we started pursuing the case, which was at the Supreme Court,” he added.
