APC Chieftain Berates Sylva over Party’s Setbacks, Electoral Misfortunes in Bayelsa
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa state, Hon. Sunday Frank-Oputu, has taken a swipe at the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, for the setbacks and electoral misfortunes experienced by the party in the State.
Oputu further said that the recent misfortunes of the party were because of Sylva’s alleged imposition of candidates, running of the party as sole owner, and playing god.
Recall that a Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt in Rivers State had thrown out the appeal by the Bayelsa state chapter of the APC over the subsisting injunction restraining it from conducting the ward, local government and state congresses.
Frank-Oputu noted that despite the fact that Sylva is the undeniable founding father of the APC in the State, other stakeholders of the party are not happy with his style of leadership which they claim is tailored towards lording it over other members.
The chieftain, who was reacting to the dwindling fortunes of the party following the Court of Appeal ruling on the conduct of the ward, local government, and states congresses in the state, accused Sylva of running of the Party in the state as a private business, saying that such is causing disharmony and crises in the party.
He said; “ First, I believe every member of the APC will be happy if these continuous setbacks are settled and APC move forward as a formidable family and stand strong to contest elections. The area that is not comfortable in all of these issues is the purported leader of the party. Because of his governorship ambition, he is saying that whatever anybody does or says does not mean anything to him. He believes that whatever he has done is final. And when you do things like that meaning you are not ready for settlement.
“Anybody who is ready for settlement, you rather move to settle with them. But Sylva rather feels after whatever he has done feels it is the aggrieved people that should come to him. He is playing god in the affairs of APC in Bayelsa. And that is unacceptable. Nobody, not even me, will accept such behaviour. It has never happened. The founders of most political parties are not the ones controlling the party today.
“Because Sylva is the founder of APC in Bayelsa does not make him the owner. A political party is a public institution and any member that joined today has every right as any founding father. The way he is running the APC seems the party is a private company is registered in his name. The party belongs to every Bayelsan and we are all founding members of the party”.
He therefore advised Sylva to stop laying claims that the state owes him another tenure as governor, saying that such claims are wrong, unfounded, and shameful ”if Bayelsans wants to elect you, they would. He should stop claiming Bayelsans are owing him a tenure. The people are the owners of power and not an individual.”
Frank-Oputu also argued that the incessant leadership misfortune of the APC in the state is self-inflicted by those who wanted to pocket the party structure to the detriment of other stakeholders, adding that it was irresponsible for a party to disregard a valid court order restraining it from going ahead with the ward, local government, and state congresses.
“They didn’t consider the implications of their actions. Why should only one man want to decide everything that happens in a political party? We are equal stakeholders and so, we have the legitimate rights to participate in all processes that will lead to the emergence of our State Executive. Why someone should shut the door against us. A simple consultation and harmonization would have saved us from these setbacks,” he concluded.

Hoodlums Attack Etsu Lokoja’s Palace, Raze Properties
Some suspected hoodlums on Saturday attacked the palace of Etsu Lokoja, Chief Emmanuel Dauda-Shelika, Nyamkpa IV, burning properties within the premises, including a vehicle.
The palace, located on plot 306, New Layout, Lokoja, was allegedly attacked by hoodlums at about 1:00 am on Saturday.
The Nupe Natives of Lokoja Development Union were planning to host the 2nd edition of the Nupe Natives end-of-the-year event, tagged “Lokoja ’24 Nupe Cultural Fiesta,” on Dec.
21, 2024, before the incident occurred. The event was, however, aborted due to the unfortunate attack.
Dauda-Shelika said this on Monday in Lokoja that he heard a big bang on my door at around 1 am.
“I woke up to check through the window, wondering what could have happened.
“Then, I suddenly saw wildfire coming out of my car that was set ablaze by attackers.
“I knew it was an attack on the palace, and therefore I could not come out because of fear of being attacked. So, I managed to come out through the back door and scaled the fence to escape for my life.
“Thereafter, I came out to the road and realised that all my neighbours in the community were on the ground trying hard to quench the fire, but unfortunately the car was burnt as well as other properties inside it.”
The traditional ruler appealed to the government and security agencies to investigate the cause of the attack and bring perpetrators and their sponsors to justice.
He admonished Nupe natives in Lokoja to avoid any reprisal attack but continue to remain peaceful and law abiding and allow the government and security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation of the attack.
“We are appealing to Gov. Ahmed Ododo and security agencies to please use their good offices to investigate this unfortunate incident and bring to justice whoever is concerned, whether directly or indirectly.
“We also want the government to kindly visit our issues by recognising and grading the stool of Etsu Lokoja, which had been in existence before colonisation,” he said.
He stated that the Lokoja Local Government Area chairman and his security team came for an on-the-spot assessment that Saturday morning, as well as the police and other security outfits.
The National President, Nupe Natives Union Lokoja, Alh. Abubakar Ndashite, said the event scheduled for Saturday was a celebration of Nupe cultural heritage and not any form of coronation as being insinuated from some quarters.
Ndashite, who doubles as the chairman of the planning committee, said the aborted event was to project the Nupe spirit and culture as well as the rich history of the diversely composed Lokoja community and the peaceful and harmonious coexistence among her.
He expressed his displeasure over the aborted cultural event, noting that the union had expended so much on it, and urged the government to bring perpetrators to book. (NAN)
