Bandits Abduct Over 100 Miners, Kill 10 in Zamfara – Emir

No fewer than 100 miners operating between Anka and Maru Local Government Areas of Zamfara have been abducted by bandits, the Emir of Anka, Alhaji Attahiru Ahmad, has disclosed.

Ahmad,  who is also the Chairman of the state Council of Chiefs, made this known in Gusau on Tuesday when the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen.

Lucky Irabor led service chiefs on an assessment visit to Gov.
Bello Matawalle.

According to him, the bandits also killed 10 persons during an invasion of a mining site in the state. He said the incident, which occured on March 2, was over-shadowed by the abduction of the 279 GGSS, Jangebe girls, by another bandits’ gang which took place on the same day.

“The bandits have been attacking those involved in artisanal mining and carting away their money and property.

“There is a disconnect between miners and bandits in the state, so we were surprised when the declaration of ‘no fly zone’ was recently slammed on our state over suspected arms supply and illegal mining when the state does not even have an airport.

“We know that there are states with more security challenges than Zamfara and we expected that if such order would be issued, it should also cover such states.

“Our artisanal miners, who are licenced, have been very helpful to the state’s economic growth and they have played significant roles in ameliorating the hardship faced by IDPs in the state by supporting them,” he said.

The first class traditional ruler, who called for more security personnel to fight banditry in the state, noted that “the peace and dislogue initiative of our governor has become necessary because at the moment we have less than 5,000 securitymen fighting over 30,000 bandits,” he said.

Ahmad however assured the service chiefs that people in the state would continue to pray for their success and urged the CDS to ensure that there is synergy among all segments of the military during operations in order to block all escape routes against the criminals.

Responding, the CDS commended the role played by the traditional rulers in fighting crime and urged them to continue to engage their subjects in giving credible information that would lead to the containment of bandits.

On his part, Matawalle assured that his administration would intensify its peace and dialogue as well as support the security in sustaining onslaught against unrepentant bandits. (NAN)

The Police Command in Osun is yet to receive any official communication on the escape of seven inmates from the the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa, Osun.

The Police Spokesperson for the command, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, said that the police state command had not been officially briefed or informed of the incident by the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).

“We heard also about the escape, but there is no official report made to the police by the NCoS.

“Our Intel revealed to us that actually, there was an escape.

“The cause of the escape is what we don’t know because our men have gone there.

“From the intelligience report we got, there is nothing we can lay hands on that made the inmates escape.

“The NCoS should inform us about what actually happened,” he said

Ojelabi said: “the police is out to protect lives and property and any criminal we see, we will apprehend”.

The NCoS declared seven inmates missing as a result of rain that damaged the security perimeter of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa in the early hours of Tuesday.

The heavy rainfall around 2:00 a.m. caused a breach in the facility’s structure, allowing the inmates to escape.

Confirming the development, the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, in a statement signed by Umar Abubakar, Deputy Controller of Corrections, Public Relations Officer, on Tuesday, ordered an immediate investigation into the incident and assured the public that efforts were underway to return the escapees to custody.

“The service is working closely with sister security agencies as well as community leaders to recapture the escapees and bring them back to custody,” the NCoS said in the statement.

“However, the Service solicits the cooperation and support of the public in providing information that may lead to the recapture of the fleeing inmates.”

Authorities have since launched a manhunt to recapture the fugitives. (NAN)
